Ramadan and the Chaining of the Devils: The Secret Behind the Awakening of Hearts!

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

And for this reason the Prophet ﷺ said: “When Ramadan enters, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of the Fire are closed, and the devils are chained”;

For indeed the pathways of the devils, which is the blood, become constricted;

And when they become constricted, the hearts are incited toward performing good deeds, by which the gates of Paradise are opened, and toward abandoning evil deeds, by which the gates of the Fire are opened, and the devils are chained, so their strength and their action become weakened by their being chained, so they are not able to do in the month of Ramadan what they used to do in other than it, and he did not say that they were killed nor that they died;

Rather, he said: “they are chained,” and the chained one from the devils may harm, but this is less and weaker than what occurs in other than Ramadan;

So it is according to the completeness of the fast and its deficiency;

So whoever’s fast is complete: it repels the devil with a repelling that the repelling of the deficient fast does not repel;

So this suitability is apparent in preventing the fasting person from food.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ.

O Allah, send Your Ṣalāh (praise, grace, honour, and mercy) upon Muḥammad and upon the family of Muḥammad, as You sent Your Ṣalāh (praise, grace, honour, and mercy) upon Ibrāhīm and upon the family of Ibrāhīm; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And bless Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad, as You blessed Ibrāhīm and the family of Ibrāhīm; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.

Tawḥīd: The Key to the Expansion of the Chest and the Tranquility of the Heart

From ʿĀ’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Prophet ﷺ gathered the members of his household, so he said: “If grief or distress afflicts one of you, then let him say: Allah, Allah is my Lord, I do not associate anything with Him (اللَّهُ اللَّهُ رَبِّي، لَا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا).”

Authenticated by al-Albānī in al-Silsilah al-Ṣaḥīḥah – number: (2755)

Imām Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

So the greatest causes of the expansion of the chest is Tawḥīd, and according to its completeness, and its strength, and its increase, the expansion of the chest of its possessor will be. Allah, the Most High, said:

“Is he whose breast Allah has opened to Islām, so that he is in light from his Lord (as he who is non-Muslim)?” (Az-Zumar 39:22)

And He, the Most High, said:

“And whomsoever Allah wills to guide, He opens his breast to Islām; and whomsoever He wills to send astray, He makes his breast closed and constricted, as if he is climbing up to the sky.” (Al-Anʿām 6:125)

So guidance and Tawḥīd are from the greatest causes of the expansion of the chest, and shirk and misguidance are from the greatest causes of the constriction of the chest and its tightness.

🌺 Good Is in What Allah Has Chosen

Al-ʿAllāmah ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Saʿdī, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

From the gentleness of Allah, the Most High, toward His servant is that his soul may long for a worldly means from among the means, in which he believes his goal will be attained. But Allah, the Most High, knows that it will harm him and prevent him from what will benefit him, so He places a barrier between him and it. Thus, the servant remains disliking it, not realizing that his Lord has been gentle with him—by preserving for him that which is beneficial, and diverting from him that which is harmful. And for this reason, being pleased with the decree in such matters is from the highest of stations.

📚 Al-Mawāhib al-Rabbāniyyah min al-Āyāt al-Qurʾāniyyah (150)

Shaykh al-ʿAllāmah Zayd ibn Muḥammad ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī — may Allah the Most High have mercy upon him — said:

“Indeed, the most noble gate from the gates of knowledge is the knowledge of Tawḥīd, which is the first obligation upon the servants, and it is the firm rope of Allah, which whoever actualizes it will attain happiness through the intercession of the master of the Messengers, Muḥammad, the truthful, the believed, the trustworthy, upon him be from his Lord the purest prayer and the most complete greeting and peace, and he will inherit the Gardens of Bliss along with the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous.

And due to the virtue of this knowledge, the greatness of its rank, and the tremendousness of its nobility, the authored works from the scholars of the earlier ones and the contemporaries have become abundant, and indeed the pen would surely be incapable of encompassing their authored works. And from those who authored abundantly in the modern era are the Imams of the Daʿwah from the scholars of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and at their forefront is the renewing Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, may Allah have mercy upon him and purify his soil. For indeed Allah rescued, through his authored works in correcting the belief and abandoning shirk, superstitions, innovations, and misguidances, much of the creation in the Arabian Peninsula and other than it from the lands of the world, from the Arabs and the non-Arabs, just as is known to the people of knowledge, understanding, fairness, and faithfulness. So may Allah reward him on behalf of Islam and its people with the best reward, and the highest bliss in the Gardens of Bliss.”

💫The Endless and Magnificent Reward of Reciting the Qur’an!

✍ Shaykh al-ʿAllāmah Zayd ibn Muḥammad ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī — may Allah the Most High have mercy upon him — said:

“And speak as much as you wish about the abundant reward in the recitation of the Qur’an: every letter is with a good deed, and the good deed is multiplied by ten. So whenever you increase in the recitation of the Qur’an, you earn from the good deeds that which you are never able to enumerate at all; rather Allah is the One who enumerates it, and He is the One who rewards for it.

So how many letters are in the Noble Qur’an?

If you complete the muṣḥaf three times in every month—and it is the most moderate and most just of matters—at a rate of three ajzāʾ every day and night, ten times, and the Qur’an is three hundred thousand letters, and twenty-three thousand letters, and six hundred and seventy-one letters, as the mufassirūn mentioned—every one of them is good deeds. And if you complete it in the month once, you have abundant profit, especially if you are from those who become acquainted, during the recitation, with the meanings of the verses.”

قَالَ الشَّيْخُ سُلَيْمَانُ الرُّحَيْلِي حَفِظَهُ اللَّهُ

كَمْ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ قَدْ ضَيَّعْنَاهُ
How many Ramaḍāns we have wasted

وَوَدَّعْنَاهُ
and bid farewell to,

وَمَا أَوْدَعْنَاهُ
and did not deposit anything in it.

فَهَلْ آنَ لَنَا
So has the time not come for us

أَنْ نَغْتَنِمَ الْخَيْرَاتِ
to seize the acts of goodness

فِي شَهْرِ الْخَيْرَاتِ
in the month of goodness,

وَأَنْ نُحْسِنَ لِأَنْفُسِنَا
and to do good for ourselves

بِمَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْبَرَكَاتِ
by what is in it of blessings

وَالْأُجُورِ الْمُضَاعَفَاتِ
and multiplied rewards.

فَلْنَعْقِدْ قُلُوبَنَا عَلَى حُسْنِ النِّيَّةِ
So let us bind our hearts upon good intention,

وَلْنُعَلِّ فِي نُفُوسِنَا الْهِمَّةَ
and let us raise within ourselves determination,

وَلْنَتَذَكَّرْ نَدَمَنَا
and let us remember our regret

عِنْدَ وَدَاعِ شَهْرِنَا الْمَاضِي
when bidding farewell to our past month,

وَلْنَحْرِصْ عَلَى شَهْرِنَا الْآتِي
and let us be keen regarding our coming month.

The Harmony Between Religion and Life: Islam Does Not Call You to Abandon Life — It Teaches You How to Live It Right!

Speak well of your wife to her mother and father. Mention her good character, her patience, her efforts, and her kindness. Speak well of her to your own parents. Let them hear from your tongue words of gratitude and appreciation for her. Speak well of her to those whom she loves. For words travel, and praise carries wings. And when these words reach her, they do not merely reach her ears—they reach her heart. They settle within her chest as tranquillity, as reassurance, as happiness that cannot be measured.

A woman finds deep comfort in knowing that her honour is safe upon your tongue. She finds peace in knowing that the man she trusted does not expose her faults, but conceals them; does not belittle her, but elevates her; does not criticise her to others, but praises her goodness. This strengthens love, deepens affection, and builds a home upon mercy and honour rather than fear and insecurity.

Reflect upon the noble example of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and how he honoured the people in their absence. Al-Mughīrah ibn Shubayl reported that Jarīr ibn ʿAbdillāh said: When I approached Madinah, I made my camel kneel, then I unpacked my belongings, wore my finest garment, and entered the mosque while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering a sermon.

The people began looking at me closely. I said to the one sitting beside me: “O servant of Allah, has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned anything about me?” He said: “Yes, he mentioned you with the best of praise. While he was delivering the sermon, he said: ‘A man from the best of the people of Yemen will enter upon you from this path, and upon his face is the mark of honour.’” Jarīr said: “So I praised Allah, Mighty and Majestic.” This was reported by Imām Aḥmad in his Musnad.

Look at this noble conduct. The Prophet ﷺ praised him before meeting him. He mentioned him with honour in his absence. He elevated him with words that brought joy to his heart before his eyes even saw him. This is the Sunnah—to honour people, to uplift them, and to speak good of them when they are not present.

So be a source of happiness for your wife with your tongue just as you are with your actions. Protect her honour. Praise her goodness. Mention her virtues. For a single sincere word spoken in her absence may bring more joy to her heart than many gifts placed in her hands.

And let it not be imagined that this advice is reserved for husbands alone—rather, it extends equally, and with equal beauty, to the wives. Yes, dear sister, this applies to you as well. Speak well of your husband in his absence. Mention him with honour to your family. Praise his efforts, his sacrifices, and the burdens he carries without complaint.

For the man walks into the world each day bearing responsibilities upon his shoulders, confronting its hardships, concealing his fatigue behind composure, and within his chest remains a quiet hope—a hope that in gatherings beyond his sight, his name is spoken with appreciation, not diminished for amusement nor offered as light conversation.

For even the strongest of hearts are nurtured by sincere praise, and even the firmest of souls find tranquillity in knowing their honour is protected. Words of appreciation do not merely please the ear—they settle into the heart as reassurance, as loyalty, as love made visible. And it is by this mutual guarding of honour, this mutual elevation through the tongue, that homes are fortified, love is deepened, and two souls become garments for one another—protecting, beautifying, and never exposing.
