🌿 The Salaf in Shaʿbān

• Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, when Shaʿbān entered, would say: “This is the month of the reciters of the Qur’an.”

• And ʿAmr ibn Qays al-Mulāʾī, when Shaʿbān entered, would close his shop and devote himself to the recitation of the Qur’an.

• Salamah ibn Kuhayl said: “It used to be said: the month of Shaʿbān is the month of the reciters of the Qur’an.”

• And al-Ḥasan ibn Shuhayl, may Allah have mercy upon him, would increase in it his recitation of the Qur’an, and he would say: “My Lord, You have placed me between two tremendous months!”

📝 Concise Rulings Related to the Month of Shaʿbān

1) The Reason for This Name:

Ibn Ḥajar, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “…And it was named Shaʿbān due to their dispersing (tashaʿʿub) in seeking water or in raids after the sacred month of Rajab had ended, and other explanations have also been mentioned regarding it…”

2) The Virtue of the Month of Shaʿbān:

That Deeds Are Raised in It to Allah:

Usāmah ibn Zayd narrated: I said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have not seen you fast any month among the months as you fast in Shaʿbān.”

He ﷺ said: “That is a month which people are heedless of, between Rajab and Ramaḍān, and it is a month in which deeds are raised to the Lord of the worlds, so I love that my deed be raised while I am fasting.”

Declared ḥasan by al-Albānī, may Allah have mercy upon him.

The Abundance of the Prophet’s ﷺ Fasting in It:

ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast until we would say he does not break his fast, and he would break his fast until we would say he does not fast. And I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ complete the fasting of an entire month except the month of Ramaḍān, and I did not see him fast in any month more than he did in Shaʿbān.”

Narrated by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and Abū Dāwūd; and narrated by al-Nasāʾī and al-Tirmidhī.

3) The Wisdom Behind Fasting in the Month of Shaʿbān:

Ibn Rajab, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“…And it has been said: its fasting is like training for the fasting of Ramaḍān, so that one does not enter the fast of Ramaḍān with hardship and burden; rather, he has trained himself upon fasting, become accustomed to it, and found—by fasting Shaʿbān before it—the sweetness of fasting and its delight, so he enters the fasting of Ramaḍān with strength and energy.

And since Shaʿbān is like a prelude to Ramaḍān, that which is legislated in Ramaḍān—such as fasting and reciting the Qur’an—was legislated in it, so that readiness may be attained for receiving Ramaḍān, and so that souls are trained thereby upon obedience to the Most Merciful.”

The Virtue of the Month of Shaʿbān:

1- That deeds are raised in it to Allah:

2- The abundance of the Prophet’s ﷺ fasting in it:

ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast until we would say he does not break his fast, and he would break his fast until we would say he does not fast. And I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ complete the fasting of an entire month except the month of Ramaḍān, and I did not see him fast in any month more than he did in Shaʿbān.”

3- Forgiveness of sins on the night of the middle of Shaʿbān:

He ﷺ said: “Indeed, Allah, the Most High, looks on the night of the middle of Shaʿbān and forgives all of His creation except a polytheist or one who harbours enmity.”

[Narrated by Ibn Mājah and declared ḥasan by al-Albānī.]

قَالَ الشَّيْخُ سُلَيْمَانُ الرُّحَيْلِي حَفِظَهُ اللَّهُ
Shaykh Sulaymān al-Ruḥaylī — may Allah preserve him — said:

غَدًا الثُّلَاثَاءُ الْأَوَّلُ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ
Tomorrow is Tuesday, the first of Shaʿbān,

وَيُسَنُّ لِلْمُؤْمِنِ وَالْمُؤْمِنَةِ
and it is recommended for the believing man and the believing woman

صِيَامُ أَكْثَرِ أَيَّامِهِ
to fast most of its days,

وَلَا يُفْطِرُ مِنْهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا
and to break the fast in it only a little.

Usāmah ibn Zayd, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah and the son of the beloved of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said:

“O Messenger of Allah! I have not seen you fast a month from among the months the way you fast in Shaʿbān!”

He ﷺ said:

“That is a month which people are heedless of, between Rajab and Ramaḍān, and it is a month in which deeds are raised to the Lord of the worlds, so I love that my deed be raised while I am fasting.”

Declared ḥasan by al-Albānī in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Nasāʾī (2356).

Shaykh Sulaymān Ar-Ruḥaylī, may Allah preserve him, said:

The recommendation of fasting Shaʿbān is emphasized by three tremendous matters:

The first: because Shaʿbān is a month of heedlessness, since it falls between Rajab and Ramaḍān, and worship during times of heedlessness and places of heedlessness is greatly virtuous.

The second: because it is a month in which the deeds of the servants are raised, and from the Sunnah and goodness for the servant is that his deed be raised to his Lord, the Most High, while he is fasting.

The third: because it was the action of the Prophet ﷺ, for he used to fast in Shaʿbān in a manner that he did not fast in other than it.

The Great Month of Shaʿbān: A Forgotten Month That Prepares the Muslim for Ramaḍān!

My dear brother and sister,

The heart of the believer walks a delicate path — a path between hope and fear. For if one outweighs the other, the soul may slip: with too much hope, one may feel secure despite sin; with too much fear, one may despair of mercy. The straight path is to carry both — in equal measure, in every breath.

In our time, you see this imbalance everywhere. Some say, “Allah is Forgiving,” while persisting in what displeases Him — delaying repentance, normalising sin, excusing negligence in prayer, and silencing the voice of accountability with false comfort. Others, when they fall, whisper to themselves, “I am ruined, Allah will never forgive me,” and so they abandon duʿāʾ, leave the prayer, and allow Shayṭān to convince them that mercy is no longer for them. Both paths are dangerous — and neither is the way of the believer.

Imām Aḥmad — may Allah have mercy on him — said: “It is befitting for the believer that his hope and his fear be one and the same.” [Masāʾil Imām Aḥmad – narration of Ibn Hāniʾ]

And he narrated in al-Zuhd from Muṭarrif ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Shikhīr — may Allah have mercy on him — that he said: “If the hope of the believer and his fear were weighed, neither would outweigh the other.”

His son, ʿAbdullāh ibn Aḥmad, reported in his Zawāʾid that al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī — may Allah have mercy on him — said: “Hope and fear are the two mounts of the believer.” They carry him through life — over hardship and ease — neither abandoned, neither ignored.

And in al-Zuhd (vol. 20), it is narrated from ʿAwn ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUtbah — may Allah have mercy on him — that Luqmān said to his son: “O my son, hope in Allah with a hope that does not lead you to feel secure from His plan, and fear Him with a fear that does not cause you to despair of His mercy.”

The son said: “O father, how can that be — when I only have one heart?”

He replied: “O my son, the believer is as if he has two hearts — one with which he hopes, and another with which he fears.”

So hold fast to this balance, O seeker of Allah. Let your fear protect you from complacency, excuses, and delay — from the voice that says, “It is only a small sin,” “Others do worse,” or “There is still time; I will repent later.” Let it restrain you when the nafs feels safe, when obedience feels heavy, and when Shayṭān beautifies what Allah has forbidden.

And let your hope pull you back when you stumble, whispering to your heart: “Return — the door is still open,” “Your Lord’s mercy is greater than what your sins have reached,” and “One sincere repentance can erase what years of heedlessness wrote.”

Walk between the gates of fear and hope, and you will find the door of Paradise standing between them.

O Allah, place in our hearts a fear that shields us from disobedience and a hope that lifts us to Your mercy. Do not let either overcome the other — and make us among those who stand between them until we meet You in safety.

Shaykh Sulayman ar-Ruhayli, may Allah preserve him, said:

شهر شعبان فيه خير كبير يغفل عنه من العباد الكثير، فقلّ من يجتني جناه ويعمل فيه بما يرضي مولاه، ويا سعادة من عمل بالسنة، وعبد الله وقت الغفلة.
The month of Sha’ban has great goodness that many among the servants are heedless of, so few are those who reap its fruits and act in it in a manner that pleases their Lord. And how happy is the one who acts upon the Sunnah and worships Allah at a time of heedlessness.

فعن أسامة رضي الله عنه قال: قلت: يا رسول الله لم أرك تصوم من شهر من الشهور ما تصوم شعبان؟ قال: “ذاك شهر يغفل الناس عنه بين رجب ورمضان…”
Usamah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting any month as much as you fast Sha’ban?” He said: “That is a month that people are heedless of, between Rajab and Ramadan.”

Shaykh Sulayman ar-Ruhayli, may Allah preserve him, said:

شعبان مقدمة لرمضان، وكثرة الصيام فيه كالسنة الراتبة القبلية لصيام رمضان.
Sha’ban is a prelude to Ramadan, and abundant fasting in it is like the regular Sunnah fasts before the fast of Ramadan.

تقول عائشة رضي الله عنها: “لم أر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم صام من شهر قط أكثر من صيامه من شعبان، كان يصوم شعبان كله، كان يصوم شعبان إلا قليلا.”
A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: “I did not see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fast any month more than his fasting in Sha’ban; he used to fast all of Sha’ban—he used to fast Sha’ban except a little.”

وكان السلف يقبلون فيه على مصاحفهم، تهيئة لأنفسهم لاستقبال شهر القرآن.
And the Salaf would turn to their copies of the Qur’an in it, preparing themselves to receive the Month of the Qur’an.

لم يستعد مؤمن لشهر رمضان بأعظم من كثرة الصيام في شعبان، وكثرة قراءة القرآن فيه، وتقوى الله، والتوبة الصادقة من الذنوب، وتقليل فضول الكلام، وتعويد النفس على ترك المشغلات والملهيات كوسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، والعزم الصادق على الاستفادة من شهر الخيرات، وتذكير النفس بسرعة رحيله.
No believer has prepared for the month of Ramadan with anything greater than abundant fasting in Sha’ban, frequent recitation of the Qur’an in it, the fear of Allah, sincere repentance from sins, reducing excessive speech, accustoming the soul to abandoning distractions and diversions such as social media, sincere determination to benefit from the month of goodness, and reminding the soul of its swift departure.

⚠️ A Weak Ḥadīth That Is Widespread on Social Media Regarding the Supplication for Reaching Ramaḍān

On the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him: that the Prophet ﷺ, when Rajab entered, said:

(اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي رَجَبٍ وَشَعْبَانَ وَبَلِّغْنَا رَمَضَانَ)
“O Allah, bless for us Rajab and Shaʿbān, and cause us to reach Ramaḍān.”

Reported by al-Bazzār in al-Musnad (117/13, no. 6496).

And the ḥadīth was weakened by al-Bazzār,

and by al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān (5/349),

and by al-Nawawī in al-Adhkār (189, no. 541),

and by al-Dhahabī in Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl (2/65),

and by Ibn Rajab in Laṭāʾif al-Maʿārif (121),

and by al-Haythamī in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid wa Manbaʿ al-Fawāʾid (2/165),

and by al-Albānī in Ḍaʿīf al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr (637, no. 4395).

And bless Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad, as You blessed Ibrāhīm and the family of Ibrāhīm; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.
