Does a Woman Have Wet Dreams Just as a Man Does, and Is Ghusl Obligatory upon Her?

Question: Does a woman have wet dreams just as a man does, and is ghusl obligatory upon her or not?

The Imām and Muḥaddith, Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī (may Allah have mercy upon him), answered:

She does have wet dreams, as is reported in the two Ṣaḥīḥs from the ḥadīth of Umm Sulaym, that she came asking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said:

“O Messenger of Allah, indeed Allah is not shy of the truth. Is ghusl obligatory upon a woman if she has a wet dream?”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Yes, if she sees the fluid.”

Then ʿĀʾishah and Umm Salamah said—and in another narration, each one of them said it separately:

“Does a woman have a wet dream?”

And in another narration:

“Woe to you! You have exposed the women.”

So the scholars understood this to mean that some women have wet dreams and some women do not, or that they felt shy and denied it. And Allah is the One whose aid is sought.

As for wet dreams, then they do occur. But do they occur to all women or only to some of them? Allah knows best.

Does Touching a Woman Invalidate Wuḍūʾ, Whether She Is a Non-Maḥram, a Wife, or Otherwise?

Question: Does touching a woman invalidate wuḍūʾ (ablution), whether she is a non-maḥram woman, a wife, or otherwise? And what is meant by touching?

The Imām and Muḥaddith, Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī (may Allah have mercy upon him), answered:

Touching a non-maḥram woman is prohibited. Al-Ṭabarānī narrated in his Muʿjam from Maʿqil ibn Yasār (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than to touch a woman who is not lawful for him.”

And al-Bukhārī and Muslim narrated in their two Ṣaḥīḥs from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The son of Ādam has had his share of zinā decreed for him, and he will inevitably encounter that. The zinā of the two eyes is looking, the zinā of the two ears is listening, the zinā of the tongue is speaking, the zinā of the hand is grasping, the zinā of the foot is walking, and the heart desires and wishes, while the private parts either confirm that or deny it.”

So it is known from this that touching a non-maḥram woman without a need is not permissible. As for a need, such as if the person is a doctor, or the woman herself is a doctor, then there is no harm.

As for whether touching invalidates wuḍūʾ or not, then touching a woman does not invalidate wuḍūʾ according to the correct view from among the statements of the people of knowledge.

As for whoever uses as evidence the statement of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

﴿أَوْ لَامَسْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ﴾
“Or you have been in contact with women.”

Then what is intended here by touching is sexual intercourse, as Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) said.

Al-Bukhārī narrated in his Ṣaḥīḥ from ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet ﷺ would pray at night while I was lying across in front of him, and when he wanted to prostrate, he would touch my leg.

The wuḍūʾ of the Prophet ﷺ was not invalidated, so the matter in this regard is easy.

Those who say that it invalidates wuḍūʾ use as evidence what has been reported in the Sunan from the ḥadīth of Muʿādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah, indeed I kissed a woman.” So the Prophet ﷺ remained silent until Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed:

﴿وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ طَرَفَيِ النَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ ذَٰلِكَ ذِكْرَىٰ لِلذَّاكِرِينَ﴾
“And establish the prayer at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. Indeed, the good deeds remove the evil deeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.”

[Sūrah Hūd: 114]

So the Prophet ﷺ said to him:

“Get up, perform wuḍūʾ, and pray two rakʿahs.”

But this ḥadīth is not authentic, because it comes through the route of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, and he did not hear it from Muʿādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). This is one matter.

The second matter is that even if it were authentic, it would not prove that touching invalidates wuḍūʾ, because it is possible that the man was not already in a state of wuḍūʾ.

This is from among their evidences, along with the noble verse, and you have already come to know that Ibn ʿAbbās explained it as referring to sexual intercourse.

And Allah is the One whose aid is sought.

Does Touching a Child’s Private Part While Washing Them Invalidate Wuḍūʾ?

Question: Does touching a child’s private part while washing them invalidate wuḍūʾ (ablution), or not?

The Imām and Muḥaddith, Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī (may Allah have mercy upon him), answered:

What appears to be correct is that it invalidates wuḍūʾ, because it has been reported:

“Whoever touches the private part…”

And the private part is the private part of both an adult and a child.
