The Etiquettes of Supplication That the Supplicant Should Observe

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

First: Presence of heart and attentiveness.

Second: That a person believes in his complete need of his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, and that he asks Him as a poor and needy servant, not as one who feels self-sufficient.

Third: That he believes Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, never fails in His promise, due to His statement:

﴿وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ﴾
“And your Lord said: ‘Invoke Me, and I will respond to you.’” [Ghāfir: 60]

Fourth: That he does not supplicate for a sinful matter or for the severing of family ties.

Fifth: That he begins his supplication by praising Allah and sending prayers and peace upon His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Sixth: That he avoids consuming unlawful wealth and unlawful food. This is among the most important of these etiquettes.

Seventh: It is recommended that he be in a state of purity, because the Prophet ﷺ said:

“I disliked mentioning Allah except while in a state of purity.”

This is better and more conducive to having one’s supplication answered.

Eighth: As mentioned in the hadith, that he raises his hands to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, because this is a sign of asking and seeking from Him.

Ninth: That the supplicant deeply feels his complete poverty and dependence upon Allah, while recognising Allah’s absolute independence from His creation, as well as the perfection of His generosity and bounty.

How Can a Person Turn All of His Actions into Remembrance of Allah?

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

A person should know that he can turn all of his actions into remembrance of Allah by intending the reward of Allah in everything he does.

He should not speak except while hoping for reward from Allah, nor refrain from something except while hoping for reward from Allah, nor perform any action except while seeking reward from Allah through it.

The Prophet ﷺ said to Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ:

“You will never spend anything seeking thereby the Face of Allah except that you will be rewarded for it—even for the morsel that you place into your wife’s mouth.”

The Prophet ﷺ also informed us that when a man spends on himself, it is counted as charity for him.

Therefore, the successful person—and I ask Allah to make me and you among them—is able to transform his ordinary habits and natural desires into acts of worship. When he does so, he becomes one who remembers Allah.

So if you wish Allah to place blessing in your lifespan and in your time, then cling to the remembrance of Allah.

Allah, the Most High, said:

﴿الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمْ﴾
“Those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides.” [Āl ʿImrān: 191]

There is no doubt that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the most abundant of people in the remembrance of Allah and the most constant of them in remembering Him.

Because of that, Allah placed blessing in his life, in his deeds, in his speech, and in his actions.

Does the Most Hopeful Hour for the Acceptance of Duʿāʾ on Friday Include Women as Well?

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned Friday and said:

“There is an hour on Friday during which no Muslim servant happens to be standing in prayer, asking Allah for something, except that He grants it to him.”

And he ﷺ gestured with his hand to indicate how short that time is.

But if someone were to ask: Does this also apply to a woman if she happens to coincide with this hour while standing in prayer, since the hadith says: “a Muslim servant”?

We would say: It is an established principle that a ruling mentioned concerning men also applies to women, and likewise a ruling mentioned concerning women applies to men, unless there is evidence indicating otherwise.
