Dear fellow Rotaractors,
I would like to begin by wishing you all a happy new Rotary Year. As we transition into this New Year, I hope everyone is feeling positive. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on my year as the country chair in a concise manner.
Initially, I found the position challenging as it was at a country-level, and I did not have a complete understanding of the expectations of the Rotaract family. Therefore, before the year started, I conducted surveys across different categories of Rotaractors, such as newcomers, inductees, and senior members.

Initially, I found the position challenging as it was at a country-level, and I did not have a complete understanding of the expectations of the Rotaract family. Therefore, before the year started, I conducted surveys across different categories of Rotaractors, such as newcomers, inductees, and senior members.
The main objective was to ensure that Rotaract Ethiopia would be influential, impactful, and have a larger membership base. As I was going to be the country chair, I researched the meaning of the words "Rotaract Ethiopia Country chair." The term "Rotaract" represents professionalism and maturity in different aspects of being a Rotarian. On the other hand, "Ethiopia" has unique characteristics and identities. From the survey, it was evident that Rotaract Ethiopia needed to be more inclusive, especially in terms of impact, location, and language.
After discussing with my District Rotaract Representative and analyzing the survey results, we decided on the motto "Elevate Rotaract Ethiopia" for the year. I did extensive research on Rotaract and Rotary partnership and Rotaract elevation on Rotary International to ensure that my team and I were well-informed. To create a diverse country team, I considered experience, clubs, personalities, unique ideas, and professions.
Additionally, when I took the position, I realized that for the past years we were acting on 'Rotaract Addis Ababa' even though the title is 'Rotaract Ethiopia' Country chair. So I included Rotaractors from clubs outside Addis Ababa to make Rotaract Ethiopia as inclusive as possible. I also created a Board of Advisors, consisting of experienced Rotaractors who would advise me. The year began with monthly training sessions for club presidents and a bi-monthly session for my team members. I also had to read more than usual to provide short training sessions. As Ethiopian Rotaractors, our main areas of focus were publicity, professionalism, and inclusiveness. We planned to double the number of Rotaract clubs in Ethiopia, and I'd say we have reached significantly close to our goal. The relationship between clubs and the country team was not satisfactory as well. Besides forming the BOD of the county team I want to create a BOA [Board of Advisors] who has good experience in Rotaract only from my point of view since they will advise me. When I create a group for my advisors I also would love to add PDRR Abenezer and IPDRR George as well.
However, we discussed and resolved issues, such as new member interviews and consultation, country chair elections, and new member engagement on positions. When I took the position the clubs we had were 16 but when I finished the year we reached 28 by adding 11 clubs out of Addis and a club in Addis but in a different location than the usual area. We also tried to be transparent to build good relationships with all clubs and individuals. I believe that Rotaract is a platform to experiment with what I want in life. I encourage all Rotaractors to learn and have fun. I am proud of the contributions that the "Country Elevators" and clubs have made to elevate Rotaract Ethiopia.

Rtr. Bethelhem Abebe is a marketing management graduate who is currently working as an operations coordinator at Hey Marketing Solutions.
She is a member of Rotaract club of Lewet and she has served her club in different roles. In addition to the assistance positions she has served her club as a project officer and club president.
She has also served Rotaract Ethiopia as a Green Rotaract Concept chair and country treasurer. She is now serving as Rotaract Ethiopia Country Chair 2023/24.
Her key objective as a country chair for the Rotary year is to create a better opportunity to all Rotaract clubs and to strengthen clubs into building opportunistic future.

Selam is a member of RAC Raey and has served in different leadership roles for the past 6 years as community director, Intract director, secretary , vice president and president . She is also a member of Rotary Addis Ababa.
