Al-Hasakah – Al-Hol Camp

Elements affiliated with ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra within the so-called Syrian Ministry of Defense of the al-Qaeda–linked interim government have released thousands of families and women affiliated with the terrorist organization ISIS from al-Hol camp, east of al-Hasakah.

The release has raised serious concerns regarding regional security and the potential resurgence of extremist networks, particularly given the lack of transparency surrounding the procedures and criteria used in the release process.

Once again, as a result of short-sighted U.S. policies under Trump, the door is being reopened for ISIS to return to the forefront. The American pullback, European complacency, and the creation of deadly security vacuums in northern and eastern Syria all work to the benefit of terrorism. Raqqa, whose liberation was paid for in blood, is today left hostage to cold international calculations, as if the lessons of past years were not enough. When the international will to protect stability retreats, ISIS automatically re-emerges as a ready actor to fill the vacuum.
