“A recent preprint from the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) showed that lipid nanoparticles, which transport COVID-19 mRNA in the vaccines, cause inflammation within cells. However, this inflammation can be reduced if the proper lipid nanoparticle is used.

The researchers tested several different lipid nanoparticle formulations in animals, including ALC-0315 and SM-102, used in Pfizer’s and Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccines, respectively.

They found that all the tested lipid nanoparticles cause inflammation by damaging cellular components called endosomes. However, the degree of inflammation varies depending on the degree of damage.

‘Our group and others have recently shown that LNPs can induce severe inflammation and worsen markers of pre-existing inflammation by up to>10-fold,’ the researchers wrote in the preprint.”

🚨 “Chinese scientists have engineered a virus with parts of Ebola in a lab that killed a group of hamsters.

A team of researchers at Hebei Medical University used a contagious disease of livestock and added a protein found in Ebola, which allows the virus to infect cells and spread throughout the human body.

The group of hamsters that received the lethal injection 'developed severe systemic diseases similar to those observed in human Ebola patients,' including multi-organ failure,' the study shared.

One particularly horrific symptom saw the infected hamsters develop secretions in their eyes, which impaired their vision and scabbed over the surface of the eyeballs.

While the experiment may spark fears of another lab leak, the researchers say their goal was to find the right animal models that can safely mimic Ebola symptoms in a lab setting.

They also noted that the experiments provided a rapid preclinical evaluation of medical countermeasures against Ebola under BLS-2 conditions, concluding the study was a success.”

Pfizer Stock Hit After Boy Dies in Gene Therapy Trial

🇺🇸Stock in Pfizer dropped on Tuesday (May 7) after a young boy receiving experimental gene therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy died during the trial.

According to STAT News, Pfizer has yet to determine exactly what happened or how the boy died, however it is pausing crossing over patients in its randomized phase 3 trial of the treatment in older boys, according to the report. The company will, for now, stop dosing patients who initially received a placebo with the gene therapy after a year.

Pfizer is expected to announce data from the study in the upcoming weeks.

Of note, in 1999 Jesse Gelsinger was the first person publicly identified as having died during a clinical trial for gene therapy - which caused the FDA to shutter human genetic research at Penn's Institute for Gene Therapy.

Shares in the pharmaceutical giant took an immediate hit on the news.

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is preparing for a scenario in which the highly pathogenic avian influenza starts spreading among humans, the agency’s commissioner said on May 8.
