Previously associated with intl globetrotters, leishmaniasis is now endemic in Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona among non-travellers.

In humans, the parasite skin infection causes hard-to-heal, ulcerating sores the size of a half-dollar or larger that can last 6 to 12 months.

Leishmaniasis-causing parasites are transmitted by some 70 species of sand fly - the main culprits in the US are Lutzomyia insects, which feed on blood and are found in southern states.
