ðŽð§ðšðļThe former head of the British Ministry of Defence tried to disrupt the supply of helicopters from the United States.
According to the newspaper, on 10 August Wallace sent a letter to his American counterpart, Lloyd Austin, saying that London was preparing to revise the contract for the purchase of 14 heavy military transport helicopters from Boeing. At the time, the issue was still being discussed by the British government and no final decision had been taken. According to the newspaper's source in the British government, such a move was seen as damaging relations with the United States, and some members of the Cabinet saw it as an attempt to "annoy the Americans". In July, Wallace publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the White House's failure to support his candidacy for the NATO secretary-general post, but the former minister's entourage categorically denied any link between the failed appointment and the issue of Chinook deliveries.
The British ambassador to the US, Karen Pierce, intervened, warning the kingdom's prime minister, Rishi Sunak, that it would be a "bad idea" to do without US helicopters.
