Answer to Q38

If 2 squares are 8, then 1 square is 4

If 2 circles plus 1 square are 14, then 2 circles are 14 - 4 = 10. Then 1 circle is 5

If 1 triangle and 1 circle are 11, then 1 triangle is 11 - 5 = 6

Answer: 6
Answer to Q39

The clue is the number of squares in the main square. In the first diagram there are 4 smaller squares and the 4 squares makes one big square making 5 squares

In the second diagram, there are 9 small squares, these 9 squares makes 1 big square, making 10 altogether.

But if you pick 4 of this 9 squares, they also make 1 square and you can count additional 4 squares this way.

Answer: 9 + 1 + 4 = 14
Answer to Q40

If A + B = 60 and A - B = 40, then what is A ÷ B?

A + B = 60 so, B = 60 - A

A - B = 40 so, A - (60 - A) = 40

A - 60 + A = 40
2A = 40 + 60 = 100
A = 100 ÷ 2 = 50

And, B = 60 - A = 60 - 50 = 10

So, A ÷ B = 50 ÷ 10 = 5

Answer: 5

Answer to Q42

8 - 8 ÷ 4 x 3

Questions like this are always to test your understanding of BODMAS rule (Bracket, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Substraction). If you don't follow the BODMAS rule, you will arrive at the wrong answer.

Bracket: we don't have any bracket

Order: we don't have any order

Division: we have 8 ÷ 4 = 2
so our equation becomes 8 - 2 x 3

Multiplication: we now have 2 x 3 = 6
so our equation becomes 8 - 6 = 2

Answer: 2
Answer to Q43

Answer to Q45

7, 15, 31, ?

I knowingly added this question because it's equivocal. I saw the question somewhere and solved it only for the publisher to tell I was wrong. Solved it another way and got a different answer (correct according to the publisher). I included the two answers in the options!

First Answer
Difference between 15 and 7 = 8
Difference between 31 and 15 = 16
So, the series is n + (8 x y). Where y > 1 and n = previous number and y = position of previous number

So, answer = 31 + (8 x 3) = 31 + 24 = 55

Second Answer
15 = (7 x 2) + 1
31 = (15 x 2) + 1

So, answer = (31 x 2) + 1 = 63

Answer: both 55 and 63 are correct
Answer to Q46

1² + 5² ÷ 25° - 5¹

BODMAS rules

Bracket: no bracket

Order: 1² + 5² ÷ 25° - 5¹ = 1 + 25 ÷ 1 - 5 (anything raise to power 0 becomes 1)

Division: 25 ÷ 1 = 25 so, 1 + 25 ÷ 1 - 5 = 1 + 25 - 5

Multiplication: no multiplication

Addition: 1 + 25 = 26 so, 1 + 25 - 5 = 26 - 5

Subtraction: 26 - 5 = 21

Answer: 21
Answer to Q47

If 5, 3 = 28 and 7, 6 = 113 and 4, 5 = -19. What is 3, 8?

The relationship between the numbers is

x, y = (x - y)(x + y)

5, 3 = (5 - 3)(5 + 3) = (2)(8) written as 28
7, 6 = (7 - 6)(7 + 6) = (1)(13) written as 113
4, 5 = (4 - 5)(4 + 5) = (-1)(9) written as -19
so, 3, 8 = (3 - 8)(3 + 8) = (-5)(11)

Answer: -511

Answer to Q50

If 13 - x = y and 5 + x = y. What is y?

If 13 - x = y and 5 + x = y. Then 13 - x = 5 + x

Collecting like terms: 13 - 5 = x + x

8 = 2x

so, x = 8 ÷ 2 = 4

But the question asked for y and not x

and, 13 - x = y

y = 13 - 4 = 9

Answer: 9
Answer to Q51

If 5, 4 = 3 and 16, 81 = 7 and 8, 36 = 2. What is 9, 25?

Relationship between the numbers is: if x, y = z then x - √y = z

5, 4 = 5 - √4 = 5 - 2 = 3

16, 81 = 16 - √81 = 16 - 9 = 7

8, 36 = 8 - √36 = 8 - 6 = 2

so, 9, 25 = 9 - √25 = 9 - 5 = 4

Answer: 4

Answer to Q54

A rectangle and a square both has the same area. Which one of them has the highest perimeter?

To answer this question let's imagine a square of length and breath 4m. The area will be L x B = 4 x 4 = 16m²

The perimeter is said square is L+L+B+B = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16m

Now imagine a rectangle with the same area 16m² which has a side as 2m. The other side will be L x 2 = 16m²

L = 16 ÷ 2 = 8m

Perimeter of the rectangle is L+L+B+B = 8 + 8 + 2 + 2 = 20m

So, the perimeter of a rectangle will be large than that of a square with equal area.

Answer: Rectangle
Answer to Q55

During a banquest, I finished a 18cm diameter pizza and my wife finished two 12cm diameter pizza. Who ate the most?

Let's start by calculating the surface area of the pizza I ate. πr²

Diameter = 18cm. Radius = 18 ÷ 2 = 9cm

A = π x 9²
A = 254.47cm²

And my wife ate two 12cm diameter pizzas

Diameter = 12cm. Radius = 12 ÷ 2 = 6cm

A = π x 6²
A = 113.10cm²

But she ate 2 so,

A = 113.10 x 2 = 226.20cm²

I ate 254.47cm² of pizza and she ate 226.20cm²

Answer: Me

[Moral of the question: there are more pizza in a single 18cm diameter than in two 12cm diameter]
Answer to Q56

There are 4 numbers w, x, y & z. w + x = 14, w + y = 15, x + z = 16 and y - z = 10. What is x and y?

w + x = 14
w + y = 15
x + z = 16
y - z = 10

y = 10 + z
w = 15 - y

Then,
w = 15 - (10 + z)
w = 15 - 10 - z
w = 5 - z

But,
w + x = 14
5 - z + x = 14
x = 14 - 5 + z
x = 9 + z

And,
x + z = 16
9 + z + z = 16
9 + 2z = 16
2z = 16 - 9
2z = 7
z = 7 ÷ 2 = 3.5
z = 3.5

x = 9 + z = 9 + 3.5
x = 12.5

w = 5 - z = 5 - 3.5
w = 1.5

y = 10 + z = 10 + 3.5
y = 13.5

So, w = 1.5, x = 12.5, y = 13.5 and z = 3.5

Answer: x = 12.5 and y = 13.5
