Al-farabi was born in Wasij, in the province of Farab in turkestan, in 872 AD (259 AH) of a noble family. His father, of persian orgin, was an army commander at the turkish court.

The main post-Islamic theoreticians of Persian music were:
Farabi (873 - 950), Abol-Faraj Isfahani (897 -967), Avicenna or Ibn Sina (980-1037), Safioddin (d. 1293), and Abdol-Qader Maraghi (d. circa 1460).36 To this list, Dr. Masudie adds Qotbeddin Mahmud Shirazi (1236-1311) and Mohammad al-Gorgāni (1337-1413).37 Jean During notes that from the ninth century, the Perso-Arabic period of music was well-established, a result of Persian influence in Baghdad when "many musicians considered as Arabs were actually of Persian origin."
