Barack Hussein Obama II was born August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Kenyan father Barack Obama Sr. and American mother Ann Dunham. His parents separated early; he spent most of his childhood in Hawaii and several years in Indonesia after his mother remarried. This multicultural upbringing shaped his worldview. Despite identity and race challenges, he excelled academically and developed an early interest in politics.
He attended Occidental College before transferring to Columbia University, graduating in 1983 with a political science degree. After working for a few years, he attended Harvard Law School, becoming the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review. He graduated in 1991.
Post-law school, Obama moved to Chicago, working as a community organizer and civil rights lawyer focused on low-income housing, jobs, and education. He also taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School for many years.
Obama became the 44th President of the United States, serving from 2009 to 2017 as the first African American president.
