On this day in 1960, mass protests erupted in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Koreans rose up against the oppressive rule of US-backed President Syngman Rhee, who governed the country since its establishment in 1948. In a matter of just 15 days, Rhee was forced to resign and fled to the US.
During Rheeโs rule the ROK witnessed numerous civilian massacres and human rights abuses perpetrated by the military, police, fascist paramilitary groups, and the US before, during, and after the Korean War (1950-1953). An estimated one million civilians were killed through mass executions and scorched-earth anti-guerrilla campaigns.
This map was produced in 2002 as part of a national campaign to pass a special law to investigate the civilian massacres in the ROK. It shows a total of 94 locations across the southern part of the peninsula where massacres occurred, although subsequent investigations revealed that the actual number of massacres was much higher, exceeding 10 times the initial estimate.
