Unlike centralized servers trying to keep others out, Mastodon's decentralized platform is designed to be inclusive of everyone

Itโs governed by open protocols, not closed platforms. It aims to give control back to users and to make sure that the social web is bigger than any single company
Example of how decentralized social media would work:
If our current social system was decentralized, youโd be able to post a picture on Instagram and I could see it and comment on it in the Twitter app. Your friends could read your tweets in their TikTok app. I could exclusively use Tumblr, and you could read all my posts in Telegram. Different apps would have different strengths and weaknesses, different moderation policies and creator tools, but youโd have the same set of followers and follow the same accounts no matter which platform you use. There would be no such thing as โFacebook friendsโ and โTwitter followers.โ The social graph and the product market would split completely

April 2023: Can ActivityPub save the internet?
The tech industry is abuzz about a new standard for social networking that is more open, more user-centric, and potentially more powerful than Twitter and Facebook
๐ณ ActivityPub that could help rewire the entire social fabric of the internet ๐
For most of the last 15 years, the social web has felt like a settled market. Facebook and Instagram won, Reddit and Snapchat were around, and everything was shifting toward algorithmic entertainment anyway. TikTokโs explosion changed the landscape, but then everything turned into TikTok anyway

You really cannot overstate how old an idea all this is. ActivityPub has been a finalized standard since 2018, but its roots go back almost as far as the web itself

In July of 2014, a new group convened, known as the โSocial Web Working Group,โ that was explicitly tasked with figuring out federated social networking

If ActivityPub really takes off, there might not need to be a next big thing at all. A couple of dominant platforms would be replaced by millions of interoperable smaller ones โ and they argue thatโs a better outcome anyway
Right now, the best reason to bet against Mastodon specifically is because Mastodon is hard:
1. The protocol doesnโt allow for any kind of universal system of identity. When you join Mastodon, you have to pick a server โ which is a lot of work and requires a lot of conceptual understanding โ and then find people to follow without any kind of cross-server directory
2. Thereโs no good tool for verification, either, so if you want to find NPR on the Fediverse, all you can really do is guess which account is the real one
3. There will be big players in the ActivityPub-led future, Dash says. Maybe not Facebook big, but big nonetheless. The difference is that no one will be tied to a platform, and any platform that tries to tie users down will lose them instead
The fundamental shift, from platforms to protocols, appears to have momentum in a way it never has before. And no one, not even Elon Musk, can get in the wayโก๏ธ
https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/20/23689570/activitypub-protocol-standard-social-network
Here come the solutions:
1. May 2023: Mastodon now has a simpler sign-up process: now it will give an easy option to create an account on mastodon.social instead of choosing a server
2. ActivityPub is based upon the ActivityStreams 2.0 data format and JSON-LD (JSON-Linked Data), which has built-in signature verification tools to authenticate every user, otherwise it freezes accounts and blocks participation
3. Meta's Thread and other major players are already on ActivityPub per Post #4 of this series

Just like how Ledger Nano claimed they have NO BACKDOOR for hackers, they (like Mastodon) decided to open their FRONTDOOR to the white hats instead๐ ๐ ๐
In 2023, the Mozilla Foundation contracted Cure53 to perform penetration testing on Mastodon's software, in preparation to bridge Mastodon with Mozilla's community. The testing "discovered" "several vulnerabilities", most notably one called "TootRoot" which would have enabled arbitrary code execution and another that would have enabled cross-site scripting attacks through oEmbed cards
Arbitrary Code Execution (ACE): an attacker's ability to run any commands or code of the attacker's choice on a target machine or in a target process. ACE vulnerability is a security flaw in software or hardware that would allow arbitrary code execution to hijack any or all Mastodon nodes/servers
Cross-Site Scripting (XSS): security vulnerability that can be found in some web applications. XSS attacks enable attackers to inject client-side scripts into web pages viewed by other users and may be used by attackers to bypass access controls
oEmbed: an open source form that enables embedding content from a website into another page. For example, Twitter uses it to embed tweets into blog posts. Squarespace, WordPress, Drupal, and LinkedIn all happen to embed content using oEmbed
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
While these vulnerabilities were supposedly "patched" in July 2023, we know that this patch was actually a test to prepare Mastodon's servers to eventually allow "white hat hackers" to hijack all of their nodes/servers in order to push specific content to individual users in 2024 Social Media Bridges as well as block nefarious servers and users๐ ๐ ๐

https://arstechnica.com/security/2023/07/mastodon-fixes-critical-tootroot-vulnerability-allowing-node-hijacking/
For example, in September 2023, the following bugs were discovered:
- Attackers can spoof domains they do not own
- By crafting specific input, attackers can inject arbitrary data into HTTP requests issued by Mastodon, which can be used to perform confused deputy attacks if the server configuration includes ALLOWED_PRIVATE_ADDRESSES to allow access to local exploitable services
- Under certain conditions, attackers can abuse the translation feature to bypass the server-side HTML sanitization, allowing unescaped HTML to execute in the browser. The impact is limited thanks to Mastodon's strict Content Security Policy, blocking inline scripts, etc. However a CSP bypass or loophole could be exploited to execute malicious XSS

On top of blacklisting accounts and servers, upgrading scripts to block bots and copycat/scammer accounts, it looks like in October 2023, Mastodon was tinkering with turning auto feed posting on/off
Also remember in Post 2 that changing servers means only your followers move with your account, but your content is not transferred, which means all subscribers to shitchanels will automatically and only see whatever content the white hats approve and block out the old shitposts๐ฉ ๐ฉ
In Post 4 the article states:
...which means between BRICSTMedia + Mastodon, white hats will control๐ฏ of the global media AND be able to push the same content across ALL channels if they choose!!! so IFIFIF there is some global EBS-type scenario still in the works, this is how they would do it!! September 2023: We expect ActivityPub will play a significant role in the social media space, but we're mentioning it here because we're intrigued by the possibilities beyond the obvious use cases in social media. An example is ActivityPub support for merge requests, recently proposed for GitLab: ActivityPub is built on HTTP, JSON, and is a W3C standard that already has multiple implementations (W3C = World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops standards and guidelines to help everyone build a web based on the principles of accessibility, internationalization, privacy and security)
So as of November 2023, the ActivityPub integration & interoperability includes:
- Mastodon
- Telegram
- Discord
- Drupal
- Flipboard
- Gab
- Instagram
- LinkedIn
- Medium
- Mozilla
- Squarespace
- Threads (by Meta/Instagram)
- Trump's Truth Social
- Tumblr
- WordPress
- YouTube
Coming soon:
- Bluesky
- Forgejo/Gitea (software dev hosting, bug tracking, code review, continuous integration)
- GitLab (DevOps)
- X.com

And best of all, as of September 2023, Mastodon/ActivityPub is now interoperable with OG Quantum Bacon Sammich RedHat itself via its brand new JSON tool via "snaps" update๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ฅ

Great call yesterday. Thank you, Emily, for the great declass. I always wanted to believe the White Hats would make the transition smooth and with little casualties. I started to listen to the whole presentation again this morning to really have a better grasp of all of it. This article was from Jan 10th, I am sure it's been seen by many, but it really wrapped IBM, Redhats, and Linux all together like Emily did yesterday. Thank you again, Emily, for all your dedication and paving the way for us to be part of this 5th industrial Revolution and white hat plan.
