HOW OPPOSITION PARTIES CAUSED THE CURRENT COST-OF-LIVING CRISIS
The Irish public were for long periods generally skeptical of lockdown and the need for the tightest pandemic restrictions in the world.
And the Irish public were correct; it was clear early on that the lockdown was having little effect on COVID mortality but came with massive economic, health, and social costs (see: Herby, J., Jonung, L., & Hanke, S. (2022). A literature review and meta-analysis of the effects of lockdowns on COVID-19 mortality. Studies in Applied Economics, (200).)
When it comes to the economy in particular, it's obvious that closing the country for 2 years is going to be bad for the economy. Costs are higher and inflation is rising because of lockdown's impact.
So if the public were tired of draconian lockdown, why did it keep going?
Answer: because the opposition parties made no opposition at all. Without elected representatives to rally around, guide them, and speak for them, the people were left powerless.
Sinn Féin and the Left parties supported more restrictions at every step of the pandemic ("The measures that have been taken have been really, really hard but they have also been really necessary. The figures don't lie." - Mary Lou McDonald, March 2021)
They are to blame for the consequences of lockdown including the current economic hardship most working class people find themselves in.
