What to sow in March - Part 1

This list is by no means exhaustive but it does cover a lot of the crops that can be forgotten (Brussels sprouts!) & the most asked about crops the last couple of weeks. ๐Ÿ˜‰

It's also important to note that everyone's garden will be different depending on your location. As you probably know by now, we are based in the North West but if you have a balmy southerly location you may be able to start a couple of weeks earlier than us.

Polytunnel/greenhouse crops
๐ŸŒถ๏ธ Chillis & Sweet Peppers - sow by mid March at the latest. Both need a temperature of at least 22หšC (We find 25หš best) to germinate reliably so will need a warm and sunny windowsill or a propagator to get started.

๐Ÿ… Tomatoes - sow by mid March at the latest. They need much the same conditions as peppers. When choosing a tomato variety bear in mind that the larger fruits take longer to ripen so depending on your location you may be better off putting your time and energy into smaller varieties rather than beefsteak tomatoes.

๐Ÿฅ’ Cucumbers and Courgetters - sow late March to mid April.
Very fast growing plants but they are also tender (especially cucumber) and will be prone to frost damage or stem rot from cold, wet soil. They are often sown in early March with peppers and tomatoes but you are better waiting until late March for courgettes and mid April for cucumbers.

Planting outdoors.
๐Ÿฅ” First Early Potatoes - Mid to late March
First early potatoes are planted in mid to late March after chitting.

๐Ÿง… Onion sets - Plant mid March to mid April
Onions can be either grown by sowing seed or planting sets. You can sow seeds in trays now or plant sets in late March.

๐ŸŸข Broad bean - Sow to late April
You can plant your seedlings out in the middle of March when you can also sow directly giving you second harvest 4 weeks or so after your module sown ones.

I've run out of space๐Ÿคฆ
Part 2 Tomorrow - lettuce, celery, celeriac, leeks, Brussels sprouts, calabrese & cauliflower.
