King Brian Boru of Thomond is presented a severed head of a Viking; Battle of Glenmama, year AD 999. 🇮🇪 Art by Angus McBride (RIP 1931-2007).

The battle of Glenmama was a result of a power-struggle between multiple Irish kings. Brian, son of Cénnetig, king of Thomond, teamed up with Máel Sechnaill, son of Domhnall, king of Meath, to attack and subdue the Irish kingdom of Leinster and their allies, the Norse kingdom of Dublin. A battle was fought near Lyons hill, in what is today county Kildare, Ireland. The result was a crushing victory for Brian and Máel Sechnaill. The king of Leinster, Máel Mordha, son of Murchadh, was deposed from his throne, while Sygtrygg “Silkbeard” Olafsson, king of Dublin was forced to flee, and later submit to Brian in order to be allowed to reoccupy his throne. The Irish subsequently sacked the city of Dublin and burned it’s nearby sacred grove, known as Thor’s Wood.
