Interesting video by Morgoth here on the lack of empathy/dehumanisation creeping into Western society.
It's been there for a while though and we saw it come to the top during the lockdowns. People who weren't economically impacted by the lockdown having no empathy for those who were. Older people having no empathy or understanding for younger people having key developmental moments in their lives ruined because they "didn't want to get it." People who were vaccine free shut out of having a normal life being smeared as antivaxxers and far right. The list is endless.
My theory is that this is also subconscious to a degree. Another example of this is the recent trend in media; art in general becoming more nihilistic and dark compared to what has come before. Game of Thrones is a classic example. People look at this kind of content to, on some level, emotionally harden up for what is coming. This appeals to people when your society is in some way suffering from decline.
