Btw this is in no way an uncritical take of our current SW institutions! People are correct to note that much of the porn space is really exploitative. This too, however, is in large part the result of the stigma against sex in America, as few legislatures are willing to go into more detail about the industry than a simple yes/no binary

This is also how protecting endangered species works most of the time. Yes, we want the public to care about this itty bitty endangered bug, but ultimately they're going to care more about pandas. So, you leverage the cute and cuddly, the pandas get their habitat protected, and subsequently the itty bitty endangered bug is protected too.
"If men within themselves would be governed by reason, and not generally give up their understanding to a double tyranny, of custom from without, and blind affections within; they would discern better what it is to favour and uphold the tyrant of a nation. But being slaves within doors, no wonder that they strive so much to have the public state conformably governed to the inward vicious rule, by which they govern themselves. For indeed none can love freedom heartily, but good men: the rest love not freedom, but license: which never hath more scope, or more indulgence than under tyrants."

Yet again posting what's possibly my favorite political quote of all time. While Milton defines liberty vs license a little differently than I might (he was, after all, a Christian writer and grounds his ideas in his religion first), he's absolutely right otherwise
