Still scary, but know that this is an older bill that gained no traction. What's interesting about it, though, is that the majority of people in Iowa support same-sex marriage. By a wide margin. One must question the political logic of this.

The reasons why wildly unpopular bills like this are proposed are such: Religious extremists, while small numerically, campaign intensely and actively. Christian fundamentalism has HUGE amounts of money behind it. These efforts don't win legislative victories, but they win donors, which win ballot victories.

This isn't new or obscure information, but it's worth being reminded of.

To all who are trying to help currently - do what you can, but take breaks. Not just from the work, also from the topic, if you can.

If we burn out we're not going to be helpful to anyone at all. As contradictory as it may sound, taking a time-out and some you-time instead can actually be very beneficial to volunteer work, but if you're engaged longer it really becomes mandatory.

Be careful with yourself and others.
