Realme finally returns to its Parent!

According to realme customer support India, realme has returned back to OPPO as a sub-brand. This follows similar scenario as OnePlus merger with Oppo. This change seems to be globally across all regions

What this could mean is Oppo team could take over or collaborate with realme for R&D in both hardware (new devices, products, IoT etc) and Software perhaps bringing better, refined product as well as more refined and optimisation software experience. Further there remains no clarity about after sales service.

Realme has started adding release Candidate update Category in existing devices!

realme has always relied on traditional means of rolling out the OTA Update which meant rolling them out in phases initially and randomly. Things have changed since many android skins are switching to release Candidate model for OTA updates.

So what does it change/Mean?

This means that from now onwards realme will rollout OTA updates in release Candidate section initially where anyone who wants to try the update out can do so. Realme like their siblings can now let users have early sneak peak into the latest update before it rolls out to users in badges itself. This changes the pattern where users complained not being able to selectively try new update initially.

Why is this better?

Eager users can now freely and selectively opt in release Candidate if they want to try update earlier. However it still would be rolled out gradually but users get satisfaction of trying update earlier. It also helps in early bug detection.

Realme's Software Future Post Merger with OPPO: Learning from OnePlus's Journey with OPPO

The recent news of Realme reportedly rejoining OPPO as a sub-brand has sparked considerable discussion about the future trajectory of its smartphones, particularly concerning software. To understand what this could mean for Realme, especially its mid-range offerings, we can look to the experience of another OPPO-affiliated brand: OnePlus. Both Realme and OnePlus, despite operating as distinct brands, fall under the larger umbrella of BBK Electronics, alongside Vivo.

OnePlus's integration with OPPO, particularly on the software front, has been a mixed bag. In 2021, OnePlus announced a deeper integration with OPPO, including merging their product and R&D teams and combining OxygenOS with ColorOS into a "unified global operating system." The stated goal of this merger was to "maximize the benefits for users" by better utilizing shared resources, leading to improved optimization, faster feature delivery, and more timely updates. Ironically, for many users, the situation has proven to be quite the opposite of what was promised.

While OnePlus CEO Pete Lau initially stated that this unified OS would retain the "DNA of OxygenOS" and be customized to remain "clean and lightweight," the reality for some users has been different. Many long-time OnePlus users have voiced concerns about the software experience post-merger. Issues such as decreased optimization, particularly on mid-range devices, and a departure from the "stock Android" feel that OxygenOS was once known for, have been frequently cited. Some users have reported performance degradation, including choppiness and lag, even on newer flagship models, attributing these problems to the shift towards a unified codebase. The integration appears to have introduced bugs and, for some, a less refined user experience than what was previously expected from OnePlus. For instance, devices like the OnePlus Nord 3 and Nord 4 have exhibited significant optimization issues from their launch or shortly thereafter, with many users reporting stutters and jitters. Even newer models, such as the OnePlus Nord 5, have not been immune to these performance inconsistencies. While recent OnePlus flagships might offer a generally smooth experience, many users have noted inconsistencies in areas like battery backup, performance (including throttling under sustained load), and heating, suggesting that even high-end devices aren't entirely exempt from the challenges of software integration. This is particularly noteworthy given that OPPO's own mid-range devices, often sporting similar specifications, frequently offer a smoother and more optimized user experience compared to their OnePlus and Realme counterparts.

For Realme, a brand that has carved out a strong niche in the mid-range and budget segments by offering feature-rich smartphones at competitive prices, this potential software alignment with OPPO could be a critical juncture. Realme UI, the company's custom Android skin, has already faced criticism regarding optimization, with users reporting buggy experience and optimisation issues like RAM management, heating, bad battery backup, lag etc. These concerns highlight a pre-existing need for robust software optimization, especially for mid-range devices where hardware limitations necessitate a highly efficient operating system.

If Realme's software development mirrors the challenges faced by OnePlus after its deeper integration with OPPO, there's a risk that Realme's competitive edge in the mid-range market could be blunted. While the merger aims to improve operational efficiency and cost control by sharing resources and minimizing overlapping costs, the crucial aspect for users will be the day-to-day software experience.

The hope is that Realme can leverage OPPO's broader resources for more stable and faster software updates, and perhaps even benefit from improved after-sales service by integrating with OPPO's established network. However, the key will be to ensure that this collaboration does not come at the cost of software optimization, particularly for the mid-range devices that form the backbone of Realme's market presence. The future success of Realme's software, post-merger, will likely hinge on its ability to maintain a distinct, optimized, and user-friendly experience that resonates with its target audience, rather than simply adopting a generic unified OS that may not cater to the specific needs of mid-range hardware.
