True. Chuck Palahniuk did a lecture once, I haven’t been able to find it online after searching for it, but the basics of the lecture were that during the time that coonskin caps were popular, trappers were making so much money from them that certain subspecies were hunted to near extinction. This of course enraged animal rights activists, who poured tons of effort and funds into holding protests and rallies and lobbying, all to no effect. The only thing that saved them from extinction: a group of fashion importers started selling new felt hats from France which became much more popular and the coonskin cap became passé and nobody wanted to buy them anymore.

The tl;dr of the story being if you want to save a species you can’t just make signs and shout at the sky, you need to invent a better hat.
