If there’s one thing I truly value in people it’s empathy; the ability to understand and share the feelings of another is a sign that you are not completely consumed by your own process.
There are 3 parts of empathy, which have more formal names but can be more easily understood as thoughts, feelings and actions.
When most people think about and discuss empathy, they tend to focus on the cognitive aspect, empathetic thoughts – ie “putting yourself in someone else’s shoes”, but to truly practice empathy, however, all 3 parts are required.
Cognitive empathy is the ability to understand someone else’s perspective and what they might be thinking and feeling. It’s the thinking part of empathy.
Emotive empathy goes beyond just the cognitive, it’s feeling the other person’s emotions. We’re actually biologically wired for this;
when we see someone being sad, for example, our ‘mirror neurons’ fire up and allow us to experience the same sadness. We don’t need to “think” about the other person being sad, we actually experience it firsthand.
Empathic action is the ‘doing’ part of empathy. It goes beyond simply understanding others and sharing their feelings: it actually moves us to take action and help however we can. It comes in many forms, depending on the situation, ranging from direct help, to asking how you can help. But very often it’s simply sitting in silence with them, holding space, communicating that incredible healing message of ‘you’re not alone’ that is the most effective and loving form of empathic ‘action’.
More often than not, it’s about ‘being’ rather than ‘doing’, so let’s always be there to hold space for one another, it’s such a shame to see how much we underestimate our healing powers. Put them into practice and watch how truly remarkable they are. ❤️❤️❤️
