If you'd been alive during 476 AD you'd call the event a nothing-burger, it was literally a barbarian general deposing a barbarian child emperor in the name of the eastern roman emperor
The real break was only forty years later, when rome invaded italy during the greco-gothic wars and especially with the coming of the Lombards
