Outnumbered But Unbroken - Tulkarem's Enduring Victory:
Today marks a defining moment in the history of resistance. 87 years ago today, the Battle of Nour Shams erupted as one of the first and most violent battles of the Great Arab Revolt of 1936.
60 Palestinian Arab fighters fearlessly ambushed a force of 500 British occupation soldiers. This force, protecting a large convoy of zionist settler vehicles, was traveling from Haifa to Yaffa ("Tel Aviv"). Despite being significantly outnumbered, the Palestinian fighters, under the leadership of Ibrahim Nassar and Abdulrahim Al-Hajj Mohammed (the commander-in-chief of the Revolt), bravely fought the occupying enemy and its settlers. With a hodgepodge of German and Turkish weapons left over from World War One, the fighters attacked the British and zionist forces despite a formidable array of seven planes, eight tanks, and a large military convoy. They were unable to defeat the will of the fighters.
The fighters closed the road, initiating a clash that would rage on for eight exhausting hours. British reinforcements came from Deir Sharaf, Nablus, where the colonists were ambushed again, exacerbating their predicament. By the end of the battle, three British planes were downed, and 50 British and zionists were killed. Two Palestinian martyrs ascended gloriously, forever immortalized in the enduring and resisting legacy of Tulkarem.
The Battle was a significant blow to the occupying forces, raising the morale of fighters and their supporters during the three-year-long revolt against the British in the midst of the Arab General Strike, the longest general strike in history. The battle is a testament to the steadfastness and determination of these fighters who dared to defy overwhelming odds.
This act of resistance ignited a spark that continues to blaze in Tulkarem today, from Raed Al-Karmi to Ashraf Na'awla to Amir Abu Khadijah. Tulkarem continues to resist, keeping alive the defiant history of the Triangle of Fire, refusing to let up.
