After the security forces of the [Palestinian] Authority yesterday launched a severe crackdown on the student movement by arresting the President of the Student Council, Abdulmajid Hassan,
We announce to you that [today], Tuesday, June 20, 2023, all activities, including all exams, at Birzeit University will be suspended in protest of the political arrest.
This step comes in the context that the assault on the student representative is an assault on the Birzeit community, for the student body chose the President of the Council to represent them. Attacking him and his absence is the first step to an assault on all the students of the university and a disregard for their democratic decisions.
We emphasize that the brutal image we saw yesterday of the method of arrest, dragging, and beating affects every free citizen and every component in the university.
From here, we call on all parties to bear their responsibility, and to pressure the Security Forces of the Authority to release the Council's president and his detained colleagues, and to stop this unacceptable phenomenon everywhere and in all parts of the homeland.
