Today, the occupation extended Mona Abu Hussein's administrative detention by 3 months.
Mona Abu Hussein is a student and a mother, from Aabod village near Ramallah. She was abducted by the Zionist occupation forces on 5 March 2024. Her administrative detention -- arbitrary imprisonment without charge or trial -- has been renewed twice, on 4 June and on 4 September, each time for 3 months. She is one of at least 7 female Birzeit University students detained in Damon by occupation forces.
The others are: Dania Hanatsheh, Layan Kayed, Shahad Owaida, Shatha Jaraba, Amal Shujaiya and Wafa Nimr.
Freedom for Mona Abu Hussein and for all Palestinian students!

Yesterday, Monday September 3, young Palestinian Jerusalemite Zeina Barbar's detention was extended after she rejected an unjust “release” under extraordinary restrictive conditions (which for Jerusalemites often include very expensive bail payments, “house arrest” that requires family members to remain with her at all times, ban on social networks, etc.), preferring to wait for an indictment. This courageous decision is an example of Zeina's strength of character and determination in the face of the occupying forces' maneuvers.
Zeina, from the Ras al-Amud district of Silwan, south of the Al-Aqsa mosque, is a graduate of Birzeit University. When she was just 15 days old, her father was arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison by the occupation courts.
Like many children of resistance fighters, she grew up looking at the photo of her loved one on the walls, and listening to stories about her father.
Zeina's father, Majd Barbar, was born in Jerusalem in 1976. Very early on, he was confronted with colonial violence and chose to resist it. He was arrested in 2001, two weeks after the birth of his daughter, and spent 20 years in colonial prisons without ever confessing or validating the accusations of the occupation courts. In 2016, after 15 years spent talking to him behind glass, through a handset, Zeina obtained permission to visit her father without separation. With love, the two finally meet again, and Majd can embrace his daughter.
On March 29, 2021, Majd was finally released and reunited with his wife, Fatima, and their family and loved ones, who welcomed him with joy and love, with scenes that brought delight throughout Palestine. In revenge, the occupying forces summoned him the next day for interrogation, which yielded nothing, and he remained free surrounded by his family. As soon as he was released, he spoke out about the need for unity around the liberation project and the need to strengthen solidarity with Palestinian prisoners, the leading edge of the Palestinian revolution. Zeina, then aged 20, welcomed him with great joy.
Zeina, who inherited her father's courage, was abducted by the occupation forces for the first time in 2021. She was arrested again on July 9 in Jerusalem's Old City and has been detained ever since.
Muntaser Barbar is Zeina's older brother. He was just under 2 years old when his father was taken from their home by the occupation in 2001. A fellow graduate of Birzeit University, he was arrested several times by the occupying forces, first in 2020, and now, he was abducted 10 days after his sister, on July 19 this year.
We can't talk about Zeina, Muntaser and Majd without mentioning the person who gave them the strength and determination to endure all these hardships and come out of them stronger: Fatima Barbar. Fatima is a model of courage and strength who, like thousands of other women who saw their husbands stolen by the occupying forces, raised their two children in the spirit of resistance, values and love for the Palestinian revolution. Having waited 20 years for her husband, she now awaits the return of her daughter, to embrace her with tenderness and love.
The attempt to “release” Zeina for an indefinite period of time with restrictive constraints is a common strategy of the occupation against prisoners - especially women and minors - from Jerusalem and the 48 territories. Many are released under expensive financial bails and placed under house arrest, banned from using social media or the internet. Their home becomes a prison, in which they can spend more than a year, and even after this period they can be reconvened for a hearing and imprisoned to finish their sentence. In addition, this period of “house arrest” is also imprisonment for another family member forced to accompany them 24/7, prevented from their own schooling or work.
