The following is a translation of an article by Qassem S. Qassem, published in Al-Carmel on May 29th, 2024.

Recognition of the State of Palestine... Thanks to Resistance, Not Negotiations (1/2):

Ireland, Norway, and Spain have all announced their recognition of the State of Palestine. Palestinian presidential sources have revealed that countries like Malta and Slovenia will soon join these three nations.

These countries did not recognize Palestine thanks to its president, Mahmoud Abbas, or because the Palestinian Authority (PA) had the attributes of a state. There are no defined borders, nor is there territorial integrity. The recognition of Palestine by these countries came due to the sacrifices of the people of Gaza and the resistance fighters, not because of Abbas's shrewdness or political acumen.

What the glorious 7th of October did was bring the Palestinian cause back to the forefront and to the global agenda, after after the most prominent cause on the face of the earth (the Palestinian cause) had been sidelined. The actions of the resistance on that morning are akin to what the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine did in the 1970s with airplane hijackings, aiming to spotlight the Palestinian cause.

For years, world governments and their peoples did not respond to the Palestinians' plight or listen to their needs. They called for an end to their displacement from the West Bank and Al-Quds, lifting the siege on Gaza, and stopping the Judaization of their towns and their holy Al-Aqsa Mosque. Yet, the international community was preoccupied. When they moved and decided to turn the tables, steadfast in the face of the zionist massacres against them, the peoples of the world woke up to discover that 2.5 million people were besieged in Gaza, that settlers were stealing lands in the West Bank, and that "israeli" occupation forces were filling prisons with prisoners to open the door for blackmail and bargaining.

What the resistance did on October 7th and is doing now has made part of the world's population hear the Palestinian narrative from the mouth of the resistance, not from the mouth of the Palestinian Authority president, who feigns weeping before the United Nations and calls for protection (as he did on May 16, 2023, when he said, "Protect us. Consider us animals and protect us"). The world saw "live on air" what "israel" commits in Gaza, and how it treats the Palestinian people like "human animals," affirming by its actions before the world what the Palestinians and the resistance had been declaring before the Al-Aqsa Flood.

The recognition of Palestine as a state by these three countries happened because of the oppression of the people of Gaza, their resistance, and the steadfastness of the people of the West Bank and their resistance. Yet, despite the Palestinian factions celebrating this step for their various political reasons and orientations, we do not see anything to celebrate. Recognizing a Palestinian state naturally means recognizing another "israeli" state, while we believe in one Arab state from the river to the sea. This will inevitably happen sooner or later. "Israel" and its henchmen in the Palestinian Authority cannot escape the "curse of the eighth decade." Even aside from prophecies, the situation and geopolitical indicators do not bode well for the safety of the occupation entity.

Why do we say this?

For 30 years, the Palestinian Authority negotiated for the recognition of a Palestinian state. During those years, the PA showed obedience to the international community and successive American and "israeli" governments to appear as a real "authority" with the attributes of a state. During that period, it arrested many resistance fighters and colluded and coordinated security with the enemy's security apparatuses to thwart any resistance action, all for the sake of recognizing the Palestinian state. Over 30 years of negotiations, the PA accepted the expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank, which is supposedly the lands of the promised Palestinian state, hoping that the settlers would leave once the state was declared. But the settlements expanded, the number of settlers increased, and the borders of the supposed state have shrunk.

The choice taken by the PA after signing the Oslo Accords in 1993 was to appease the enemy, believing it was possible to reach a peace agreement with it, waiting for the final solution and the declaration of the state, which was planned, according to Oslo, for 1999. Years passed, peace conferences followed, and "partner" Yitzhak Rabin was killed by the extreme Jewish right. The popularity of the extreme right rose, it came to power through Likud, and "israeli" society became more inclined to show extremism. The return of the "Labor Party" to power was no picnic, with opposition leaders Ariel Sharon and Benjamin Netanyahu turning his term into a nightmare. In the face of this reality, the Palestinian leadership came to the conviction that the state would not be declared except through the barrel of a gun, especially after the failure of the Camp David summit in 2000. Yasser Arafat returned to the option of intifada. Over five years of resistance and offering martyrs, the second intifada imposed "disengagement" on one of the occupation entity's most famous generals, Ariel Sharon, who withdrew from Gaza and northern West Bank, dismantling settlements there.

Those who are called intellectuals of the Palestinian Authority and those feeding off its crumbs say the intifada destroyed the Palestinian economy, as if it is possible to talk about an economy under occupation or as if Ramallah's economy was as developed as Malaysia's, for example. They claimed the intifada had significant negative repercussions on Palestinian society, as if society was living in Switzerland and suddenly saw the gun and discovered it was under occupation. These people promoted false news suggesting that the intifada took us away from the dream of establishing the state and destroyed its most important pillar, the economy. Yet they do not acknowledge that the second intifada managed to liberate Gaza and (partially) the northern West Bank, helping the resistance in Gaza accumulate its strength and experience to reach what it has today.

After 2005, PA President Mahmoud Abbas came to power. He decided to erase all of Arafat's legacy. If Abu Ammar [Yasser Arafat] had raised an olive branch in one hand and a gun in the other, Abbas not only dropped the gun and held the olive branch but cut off the hand that held the gun. All this to declare his submission to America's dictates and its general who managed the PA after the intifada, Keith Dayton.

Perhaps to obtain a state, one does many things. If Netanyahu wants to be remembered as the man who led the occupation entity past the "curse of the eighth decade," Abbas wants his legacy to be tied to the founder of the modern Palestinian state. But experience has proven that countries are liberated not through negotiations but through the rifle and sacrifices. All the Oslo Authority has done in the occupied West Bank is a waste of time, as in eight months, the resistance achieved what the Palestinian Authority could not achieve in 30 years.
