Yesterday, prisoner Shukri Abu Baker wrote his final public letter. Shukri has served 15 years of his 65-year sentence in the United States on false charges of sending money to so-called "terrorist" organizations in #Gaza through the the Holy Land Foundation, shut down in late 2001.
Shukri, one of the Holy Land Five, remains imprisoned along with Mufid Abdulqader and Ghassan Elashi on baseless charges; Mufid will be released in 2025. Abdulrahman Odeh and Mohammed Al-Mezain were released in 2020 and 2022; Mohammed was immediately deported to Turkey.
The Holy Land Foundation sent money to the same charities funded by USAID and the Red Cross, yet the five Palestinians were imprisoned by the US based on anonymous and falsely translated "israeli" intelligence, even following an initial mistrial. It was the only time in US history that a witness was allowed to remain anonymous. Even the political affiliations of family members were used as "evidence."
This came after over a decade of surveillance, as their foundation sent millions of dollars to those in need in occupied Palestine. Their family members were even imprisoned and deported.
In 2007, a jury deemed the men not guilty on almost all of the 197 charges until one juror "spontaneously" changed their mind following zionist pressure. 108 guilty charges were handed down on the five men.
Ghassan Elashi said: "We helped Palestinian orphans and needy families, giving them hope and life. We gave them hope and life, and what was the occupation giving them? It was providing them with death and destruction. And then we are turned criminals."
