Since consequences of elections are irreversible,they must be 100% transparent. The results must be beyond reasonable doubt. Anything that blocks witnessing the full chain of custody from identification of the voter through the full counting of ballots is the same as a trial where the inspection of evidence is withheld from both judge and jury.
