MANHATTAN, NYC, New York

A suspected electrical fire in a manhole at E 32nd St and Madison Ave in Midtown Manhattan caused a loud explosion and knocked out power to several nearby buildings Tuesday morning.

Thick, black smoke was seen billowing out of the manhole shortly after the incident. Witnesses described the immediate aftermath as alarming.

"We heard a big boom and we thought it was a bomb, but it turned out to be an electrical fire right down the block," said Michael Ades, who works in a nearby building that lost power.

The power outage affected multiple commercial buildings in the area. There were no injuries reported, but multiple people had to be rescued from a stuck elevator due to the power failure, according to the FDNY.
