Engineers from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in China have developed a groundbreaking ferroelectric transistor just a few atoms thick, signaling a potential revolution in memory and neuromorphic computing.
The device leverages layered 2D materials-graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-which, when stacked, create a unique moirรฉ pattern. This structureโs main feature is its ability to store 3,024 different polarization states, a figure that is two orders of magnitude greater than previous analogs. This breakthrough is achieved through the precise control of electrical impulses that cause the atomic layers to slide relative to each other.
The transistor has demonstrated high stability, maintaining its programmed states for over 100,000 seconds (more than 27 hours). Furthermore, it has proven its practical application in AI tasks, achieving an impressive 93% accuracy in image recognition tests. Such multi-state transistors are ideal building blocks for neuromorphic chips, which are designed to mimic the structure and efficiency of the human brain.

Friedrich Merz has called for an end to widespread anonymity on the internet, saying users should post under their real names.
"I want to see real names on the internet. I want to know who is speaking. In politics, we engage in debates in our society using our real names and without visors. I expect the same from everyone else who critically examines our country and our society," Merz said on Wednesday evening at an event held by his conservative Christian Democrats in the western city of Trier.
Merz criticized defenders of online anonymity, saying they are "often people who, from the shadows of anonymity, demand the greatest possible transparency from others."

Nvidia has expressed ambitions to become a standalone data center CPU vendor, and a new partnership with Meta represents a big step forward for that plan. As part of a new multi-year strategic partnership, Meta says it'll expand its use of Nvidia tech as it continues to build out hyperscale data centers optimized for its AI training and inference efforts. Those plans include โmillionsโ of Blackwell and Rubin GPUs, part of a massive AI spending plan from Meta that could reach as much as $135 billion in total for 2026.
Meta will use also Nvidia's Arm-powered Grace server CPUs as standalone platforms in its production data centers. The companies say their collaboration is the first "large-scale Grace-only deployment," and it's meant to deliver a sizeable performance-per-watt improvement for the company's facilities.

The U.S. State Department is developing an online portal that will enable people in Europe and elsewhere to see content banned by their governments - a move Washington views as a way to counter censorship. The site presumably will be hosted at "freedom.gov."
Officials had discussed including a virtual private network function to make a user's traffic appear to originate in the U.S. and added that user activity on the site will not be tracked. Headed by Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers, the project was expected to be unveiled at last week's Munich Security Conference but was delayed.
A State Department spokesperson said the U.S. government does not have a censorship-circumvention program specific to Europe but added: โDigital freedom is a priority for the State Department, however, and that includes the proliferation of privacy and censorship-circumvention technologies like VPNs."

Chris Wright urged the International Energy Agency (IEA) to abandon its work on climate change and focus instead on its founding mission. Wright warned that the U.S. could quit the IEA and would endeavor the global energy watchdog to move away from its net zero by 2050 agenda over the coming months.
"The IEA was created to focus on energy security. That mission is beyond critical and I'm here to plead to all the members (of the IEA) that we need to keep the focus of the IEA on this absolutely life-changing, world-changing mission of energy security," - Wright said at a ministerial meeting of the agency in Paris.
The IEA produces monthly reports on oil demand and supply as well as annual world energy outlooks that include data on the growth of solar and wind energy, among other analyses.

AMD's AI chips will be used as debt collateral in a deal to financially support a cloud startup buying the company's processors. It's the first known occurrence of the practice with AMD's chips, creating a circular deal similar to those that Nvidia has been making to increase GPU sales.
The $300 million loan from Goldman Sachs to the cloud startup Crusoe will be used to buy AMD's AI chips (presumably it will be a member of the Instinct MI450 series). Those chips will be used in a datacenter in Ohio. AMD is set to effectively serve as guarantor for the deal by agreeing to rent the chips from Crusoe if the company can't find other willing customers. In the meantime, AMD will get to say it has $300 million in AI chip sales.

Trump called a Supreme Court ruling that struck down his tariffs โa disgraceโ. He told those gathered that he has a backup plan in mind. Officials inside the Trump administration had been bracing for a loss at the Supreme Court, assuring the president that if the court struck down his tariffs there would be other ways to implement them.
The U.S. Supreme Court struck down Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs that he pursued under a law meant for use in national emergencies. The justices, in a 6-3 ruling authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, upheld a lower court's decision that Trump's use of this 1977 law exceeded his authority. The justices ruled that the law at issue - the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) - did not grant Trump the power he claimed to impose tariffs.
The decision does not affect all of Trump's tariffs, leaving in place ones he imposed on steel and aluminum. He could still seek to reimpose some tariffs using other laws.

Ctrl Alt, a leading tokenization infrastructure provider, and the Dubai Land Department (DLD) announced today the launch of Phase Two of Dubaiโs Real Estate Tokenization Project Pilot, introducing controlled secondary market trading capabilities for tokenized real estate assets.
Phase Two builds on the successful pilot stage, during which 10 properties were tokenized, representing more than $5 million (AED 18.5 million) in real estate value. Approximately 7.8 million tokens issued during the pilot will now be eligible for resale within a controlled secondary market environment, expanding access and liquidity across Dubaiโs real estate market.
The secondary trading phase is designed to evaluate market efficiency and operational readiness while strengthening transparency, governance, and investor protections. Trading will take place within a regulated pilot framework on the projectโs distribution platform to ensure transaction integrity and alignment with existing land registry processes. All on-chain transactions in this phase will continue to be executed on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and secured by Ripple Custody.
โFor Phase Two, Ctrl Alt will issue Asset-Referenced Virtual Asset (ARVA) management tokens to facilitate regulated secondary-market transfers. Both ownership and management tokens will be recorded on-chain, creating a single, immutable record of ownership. This infrastructure is underpinned by Ctrl Altโs role as a licensed Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP), the first firm to receive an Issuer license from VARA, and a holder of a Broker-Dealer license.

Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine have developed an experimental immunotherapy that tackles metastatic cancer. Rather than attacking cancer cells themselves, the treatment focuses on the cells that surround and shield them. By disabling these protectors, the treatment opens tumors to an immune attack, allowing the bodyโs defenses to enter and destroy the cancer.
The therapy was tested in aggressive preclinical models of metastatic ovarian and lung cancer, and the results point to a potential new strategy for treating advanced solid tumors. The researchers caution that studies in humans are still needed to determine whether the therapy will be safe and effective for patients. This establishes a new way to treat cancer and could form the basis of future CAR-T therapies.

Toronto-based chip startup Taalas said it had raised $169 million and has developed a chip capable of running AI applications faster and more cheaply than conventional approaches. Taalas has raised a total of $219 million from investors such as Quiet Capital, Fidelity and Pierre Lamond, a chip industry venture capitalist. Taalas' announcement arrives weeks after Nvidia's, opens new tab deal to license intellectual property from chip startup Groq for $20 billion.
Taalas' approach to chip design involves printing portions of an AI model onto a piece of silicon, effectively producing a custom chip suited for specific models such as a small version of Meta's Llama model. The customized silicon is paired with large amounts of speedy but costly on-chip memory called static random-access memory (SRAM), which is similar to Groq's design.
It takes roughly 6 months to fabricate an AI processor such as Nvidia's Blackwell. Taalas said it can produce chips capable of running less sophisticated models now and has plans to build a processor capable of deploying a cutting-edge model, such as GPT-5.2, by the end of this year.

A Chinese energy firm has successfully tested an experimental blimp-like wind turbine capable of generating energy in the skies above cities and inland communities.
Developed by Beijing Linyi Yunchuan Energy Technology, the S2000 airborne wind energy system (AWES) is a large, helium-filled airship containing 12 wind turbines. The craft ascends thousands of feet into the air to harness the stable wind speeds at higher altitudes, which spin the turbines and generate electricity. This is then sent down the tethering cable to the ground below, where it can enter the grid.
In its test flight, the manufacturers flew the S2000 at an altitude of 6,560 feet (2,000 meters) above Sichuan Province, generating 385 kilowatt-hours of electricity. This is enough to power the average U.S. household for approximately 13.3 days, per usage figures provided by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
