New Mexico sued Meta in 2021 over a scandal involving the political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, saying the social media company had misled users with its public statements about their data privacy.
Last month, after a two-week trial, a jury in the State District Court in Santa Fe ruled against Meta, saying the company had committed 43 million violations of New Mexico’s consumer protection laws. Each violation carried a penalty of up to $5,000.
Judge Francis J. Mathew of the Santa Fe court issued the landmark penalty, writing that the company and its executives purposefully misled the public.
“The harm in this matter is difficult to overstate, and goes to the heart of Facebook’s basic business proposition,” — Judge Mathew wrote in a 20-page judgment.
He said the “extraordinary number of willful violations” that repeated over years “support the highest level of penalty.”

Musk predicted that advances in robotics and space travel will create a multiplanetary economy, at which point "money becomes irrelevant" and "conventional currency will not matter."
“I think currency will be measured in fundamental physics metrics like, you know, power, like wattage and tonnage, mass and energy.”
“There won't be anything that humans can do that the AI and the robots can't do better. People will likely turn to hobbies like growing their own fruits and vegetables, or making art, to find purpose in life,” — he said.

Arf is bringing RLUSD-powered settlement liquidity to licensed cross-border payment companies on the XRP Ledger. Arf helped pioneer PayFi and has scaled to around $10 billion annually in global settlement volumes. As XRPL's native lending infrastructure comes online, it will become part of that settlement liquidity.
“Payment companies need capital to keep money moving while they wait for funds to settle. We’re meeting that need at scale, with $10 billion in annual settlement volume and capital turning over four times a month.
Through this partnership with Ripple, we’re bringing stablecoin working capital to the XRP Ledger to help payment companies bridge that gap and support more payment volume,”– Ali Erhat Nalbant, Co-founder and CEO at Arf, said.
Arf has already built against the proposed protocol, providing a concrete implementation of how the Lending Protocol can support institutional settlement financing.

More than 1000 mathematicians have pledged not to work for AI companies and to avoid using their models – to varying extents – in their research. The move comes amid a growing backlash against the way AI companies have used their models to solve thorny mathematical problems, many of which had stumped humans for decades.
The Association of Human Mathematicians (AHM) was created in the wake of controversial discoveries from AI companies, such as the release of 722 papers in one fell swoop by OpenAI earlier this month. Membership now stretches to more than 1000 people, including professors and PhD students.

Chinese scientists have developed a 100-channel single-photon detector, a breakthrough promising to pave the way for broadband quantum networks.
State-of-the-art single-photon detectors – essential components underpinning photonic quantum technologies – could previously support a maximum of 32 detection channels for photon signals.
Now, a newly developed interconnect scheme by a Shanghai-based team has broken this bottleneck, supporting more than 100 detection channels while maintaining accurate and stable operation.
“This work establishes a robust and scalable infrastructure, paving the way for large-scale quantum photonic applications,” — the authors said.

General Motors plans to lean into AI and vehicle software for future growth and development amid increasing competition abroad from Chinese automakers and a tougher U.S. market.
GM also reconfirmed that by 2028, it wants to have eyes-off highway driving, or “personal autonomy,” that will let drivers take their attention off the road. The automaker said that technology would start with the Cadillac Escalade IQ EV before rolling out to other, more high-volume models.

As data centers expand, Representative Eugene Vindman wants the companies behind them to pay the added costs of supplying their electricity — rather than passing those expenses to other utility customers.
The Democrat representing Virginia’s 7th District introduced the Make Data Centers Pay Act, which would amend federal law to prevent qualifying data centers’ power and infrastructure costs from being shifted onto households and small businesses.
"Hardworking Americans should not have to pay higher electricity bills to subsidize some of the largest and most energy-intensive data centers in the world,"— Vindman said.

SpaceX aims to secure a minimum of 80,000 cell sites across the US, and it’s in talks with at least one major cellular infrastructure company to reach that goal.
The agreements would solidify the rocket and satellite giant’s path toward building a fourth nationwide wireless carrier. One of the companies they’re in talks with is Crown Castle Inc., which, along with American Tower Corp. and Vertical Bridge Holdings, are among the largest owners of cellular towers.

Microsoft’s AI diagnostic system correctly diagnosed complex medical cases in a simulation more than twice as often as generalist physicians, according to a study published Thursday in Science. Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft AI’s CEO, called the result a step toward “medical superintelligence.”
The system, dubbed MAI-DxO (DxO for short), coordinates several AI agents that act like a panel of doctors. They question a patient, order tests, and debate a diagnosis.
Microsoft joins Google and OpenAI in claiming that its AI can match or outperform doctors.

In September, U.S. Bank officially launched the pilot of USBDC on the Stellar network.
USBDC is one of the first bank-issued stablecoins deployed on a public blockchain, and it’s designed to make cross-border payments more efficient than ever.
Jamie Walker, Head of Digital Assets & Money Movement, joins Denelle Dixon on block by block to discuss U.S. Bank's stablecoin pilot, what it unlocks, and why they launched it on Stellar.
“They say history repeats itself. When it comes to the world's most successful networks, that's a good thing. First, open networks shaped how we connect and share information.
Now, they're shaping how money moves,” — Denelle Dixon said.💸
