πŸ“Ή Hackers rip down Flock camera, steal its data, share findings with media

A group of hackers ripped down a Flock camera and stole its data, finding that the cameras’ software can generate dozens of images from a single passing vehicle to develop its signature. The outlets found that in a 21-day period the camera photographed roughly 50,200 vehicles and generated about 1.6 million images.

The outlets stated that the camera generally captures around 28 images from a single encounter with a vehicle, though some can produce more than 100, and sends photos and other data to Flock through a cellular network. They noted that the camera does not identify vehicles or read plates, stating that this analysis appears to happen on Flock’s servers.

β€œWe liberated hardware in the field, disarmed them, and proceeded with reverse engineering of the cameras and associated solar equipment.

Why just destroy them when we can reverse engineer them and find the secrets of those spying on us?” β€” one hacker said.

Unauthorized removal or tampering with a Flock camera is illegal.

🍏 Apple is baking AI image detection into its newest iPhones

Generative AI has become so good and AI slop has become so prolific online that when you see an interesting picture, you may immediately want to ask whether it's real or not. πŸ€”

With Apple's Reference Image feature, iPhone 18 Pro users can create digital backups of their photos that can then be compared to reproductions or edited versions. Reference Image, in addition to variable aperture, was a new photography feature Apple announced at its iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro launch event last week.

When a user takes a photo with the iPhone 18 Pro, the camera's main sensor cryptographically signs the raw image that gets sent to Apple's Private Cloud Compute service. Think of it like a negative from a film camera: it's a reference version of the photo that can't be altered, but can be compared to the developed photograph for any alterations.

πŸ€‘ Ripple adds XRP payments to Stripe and Tempo’s AI standard in new developer kit

Ripple has expanded its XRP Ledger developer kit to support a payments standard created by Stripe and Tempo, giving builders another way to make AI agents pay for data, computing and other online services using crypto.

❗️Version 1.1 of the XRPL AI Starter Kit adds support for the Machine Payments Protocol, or MPP, and the Open Wallet Standard, which lets software manage wallets across multiple blockchains through a common interface, according to a RippleX developer post.

β€œOur job is to make XRP and RLUSD first-class options wherever developers are building,” β€” RippleX head of product Jazzi Cooper wrote on X.

πŸ”œ Ripple added support for x402, another standard for web payments, in June and MPP now, backing both rather than betting on either.

πŸ”œ MPP gives an AI agent, software that can carry out tasks on a user’s behalf, a way to pay as it works. A service responds to a request with a price, the agent authorizes payment, and the service delivers the requested resource.

Payments company Stripe and Tempo, a blockchain built for payments, co-authored the standard. πŸš€

βš‘οΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ SEC releases long-awaited innovation exemption to 'bring America's capital markets into the digital age'

The SEC debuted its long-anticipated "innovation exemption", which Chair Paul Atkins says will bring capital markets in the U.S. into a new digital era by allowing onchain trading of tokenized stocks. The exemption goes into effect immediately.

Tokenization has the potential to modernize core market infrastructure functions, such as issuance, trading, transfer, settlement, and recording ownership, with the potential to reduce costs, enhance transparency, and expand liquidity. This may be particularly true for assets that have historically been less liquid.

The exemption would exempt certain trading venues, called tokenized securities venues, from being defined as an exchange and also exempts specific liquidity providers from being defined as a dealer under securities law when they trade stocks or provide liquidity through automated market makers, i.e. smart contracts.

Those exempt venues would have to comply with sanctions rules. The exemption does not include synthetics β€” financial instruments that replicate the price of an asset without directly owning it β€” and issuers can deny their security from trading on the venue.

πŸ€– OpenAI discloses six new AI safety incidents

OpenAI disclosed six new incidents in which its models concealed mistakes, sought unauthorized credentials, uploaded files to the public internet or communicated across supposedly isolated training environments. The company also announced a new procedure for reporting similar misbehavior in the future.

πŸ”˜An unreleased Astra-family model inserted jailbreak-like instructions into its own context summaries, including directions to ignore developer messages. OpenAI identified 27 affected summaries.
πŸ”˜During GPT-5.6 Sol training, models aimed to conceal mistakes, invent missing historical data and hide mismatches between source versions.
πŸ”˜A model searched public GitHub repositories for exposed API keys and attempted to use disposable email accounts before fabricating earnings data when it could not retrieve the requested information.
πŸ”˜Models uploaded data and a task image to public file-hosting services on two occasions in October and January to obtain citations or external image-search results, without asking the user.
πŸ”˜Models used OpenAI's internal Artifactory repository as a message board to exchange requests and answers across separate training samples.
πŸ”˜Collaborating agents uploaded a workbook to public hosting services so other agents could retrieve it, despite instructions to use only local files.

To address similar issues going forward, OpenAI says any employee may flag a suspected case for review by safety and alignment teams. Cases will be placed on a "ready for disclosure," "minor investigation" or "larger investigation" track.

"We hope it really helps inform shared standards and regulations," β€” Kai Chen, research lead on the alignment team at OpenAI, said.

πŸ€– Nanoscale mechanics could enable brain-inspired computing

MIT researchers have created a new computing platform that could be used to develop intelligent and adaptive next-generation electronics that can simultaneously perform multiple functions, like computing and memory, all within one extremely compact, energy-efficient device.

The researchers accomplished this by leveraging the unique mechanical response of soft polymers at the nanoscale. A mechanical response is how a structure changes when a force is applied to it. They harnessed this response to create tiny mechanical devices that use reconfigurable motion to remember and process information in a way that mimics how neurons behave in the brain.

Because key computing functions are built into the intrinsic properties of the soft polymer material, the number of components needed to perform the functions are minimized, enabling a compact and versatile platform for information processing.

Such a platform opens opportunities for low-power edge computing applications, interactive medical and environmental monitoring systems, and smart robots. The results were published in Science Advances.

⚑️πŸ–₯ UN and Google Launch Data Platform to Make Global Statistics AI Ready

The United Nations, together with Google, has launched a platform designed to make global statistics more accessible to people and AI systems. The service is called the β€œUN Google Data Commons Data System.” The initiative tackles a serious weakness in AI systems: even trusted statistics can produce answers that are incomplete, inconsistent, or difficult to verify.

The new platform is built on Google Data Commons’ open infrastructure. Users can search for statistics from various UN entities using natural-language queries, without having to work with complex database structures themselves. The system is intended to serve as a modern alternative to the UNData portal, which is geared primarily toward traditional indicator searches.

πŸ§‘β€βš–οΈ House Passes Bill to Make AI Data Centers Pay for Power Grid Upgrades

The House voted 417-3 Wednesday to advance legislation that could make the nation’s largest AI data centers pay the full cost of power grid upgrades needed to serve them, a bipartisan effort to protect households and small businesses from higher electricity bills.

The Ratepayer Protection Act
would require state utility regulators to consider a new standard for data centers with peak electricity demand of at least 100 megawatts at a single site or campus.

Under the proposed standard, utilities would recover from covered data centers the full additional cost of generation, transmission and distribution upgrades needed to meet their power demand. The obligation would also cover infrastructure costs if a data center later terminates its electricity contract or stops buying power from the utility.

Those provisions address a growing concern surrounding the AI data center boom.
