🤖 Anthropic CEO calls for AI race to slow down citing safety. Musk and OpenAI's Altman agrees

In an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier”, Dario Amodei, CEO of Claude’s developer, Anthropic, called for companies to deliberately pace advances in frontier AI, arguing that model capabilities were improving faster than researchers’ ability to understand and control them.

“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” — Amodei wrote.


❗️However, he didn’t call for an outright halt, arguing for slowing down the pace of the development.

“Not building the technology deprives humanity of benefits or simply places AI in the hands of authoritarian powers, while building it too fast is reckless.”


Two other prominent leaders of rival giant AI and tech companies quickly backed the idea:

🔜 OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, said, “I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier,” to give society time to adapt to increasingly powerful systems.

🔜 Elon Musk, whose firm xAI has developed Grok, also publicly backed Amodei’s latest proposal, responding that “Dario is right.”

Three of AI’s most prominent rivals now share the view that frontier AI should keep advancing, but not necessarily as fast as technically possible.

President Donald Trump downplayed the growing alarm over risks from AI after some of the industry's leaders called for slowing the development pace of the technology.

"We're leading China in AI. We're the most sophisticated country in the world, and frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI wins," — Trump said.

"And we can put guardrails. We can do this and that. But I think you have a lot of negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn't be bringing it up."

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney wants closer links with the European Union and is exploring whether his country could become an "associate member" of the ​bloc. Carney has ​spoken regularly with several ​EU leaders, most ⁠notably French President Emmanuel Macron, about the possibility of letting Canadians live and work visa-free in the EU. Both leaders are set ​to meet ⁠later this month.

Canada and the EU are discussing freer movement of goods, services and workers in strategic sectors like energy, AI, defence and critical minerals, while also exploring joint infrastructure projects, including underwater cables, data centres, cloud storage, satellites and energy routes.

💊 Scientists discover a hidden switch that shuts down inflammation

Inflammation is one of the immune system's most important defense responses. It helps the body fight infection and repair damaged tissue. But if that response remains active for too long, it can begin to harm healthy tissue and contribute to conditions including arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes.

Researchers at University College London (UCL) have identified a biological mechanism that helps the body bring inflammation to an end, a finding that could eventually lead to new treatments for chronic inflammatory diseases affecting millions of people.

The new study, published in Nature Communications, points to a group of small fat-derived molecules called epoxy-oxylipins as part of that shutdown process. These molecules act like natural brakes on the immune system.

"This is the first study to map epoxy-oxylipin activity in humans during inflammation. By boosting these protective fat molecules, we could design safer treatments for diseases driven by chronic inflammation," — corresponding author Professor Derek Gilroy (UCL Division of Medicine) said.

🤖 MIT’s Math Breakthrough Could Make Blockchains Quantum-Proof

Here’s the key insight: you don’t need to encrypt all the data to make it quantum safe. Decrypting everything is computationally hard and very expensive.

❗️Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC), a coding method developed over two decades in MIT lab “Network Coding and Reliable Communications Group” offers a proven alternative. RLNC takes data and splits it into coded equations, which can then be mixed and recombined as they travel through the network.

⬇️ Traditional PQC is costly because it requires encrypting and decrypting all the data. With PQC encryption via RLNC you only need to encrypt a fraction — one out of ten coded equations — and the entire dataset inherits its quantum-safe protection.

🔘With RLNC, encrypting 10% of the data effectively protects 100% of the dataset, while cutting 90% of the computational burden. It’s all based on pure math. Because RLNC consists of encoding and decoding data into packets, it can be embedded at any level of the Web3 stack, enabling quantum-safe, scalable performance of decentralized systems.

🔘At the application level, the math is applied at the software layer and managed locally, representing the fastest pace to adoption. At the infrastructure level, MIT lab has done a synthesis of RLNC in hardware chips at MIT, showing that this can scale down to silicon and into the core of blockchain nodes, ensuring long-term systemic resilience with minimal cost.

Ultimately, RLNC can also be leveraged as a “quantum-safe memory layer” for blockchains. A way to ensure that data propagation, storage, and writing to the chain inherits quantum security without every transaction being painfully encrypted end-to-end.

🚘 China Is Ditching Touchscreens For Essential Controls In New Cars

China's MIIT has drafted new rules that would bring back physical controls for essential functions on new cars. The law is expected to go into effect on July 1, 2027, and it would require new vehicles to have certain physical controls, triggers, and switches with specific size and feedback requirements for each button.

This does not mean touchscreens are going away on newer model cars, but it does impact controls that were previously integrated into the touchscreen display, including turn signals, lighting, shifting gears, windshield wipers, and window defrosters. The touchscreen will remain in place for other functions and cool dashboard gadgets.

🤖 Scientists just made quantum computer operations 1,000 times faster

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have now developed a method that can perform a broad range of advanced quantum operations more than a thousand times faster. The advance tackles a major obstacle in the field and could help move quantum computing closer to becoming fault-tolerant.

Researchers are exploring bosonic quantum codes to make quantum computers more resilient to errors. Instead of assigning quantum information to individual qubits, this approach stores it in microwave fields inside superconducting circuits.

"Our method shows that a diverse range of quantum operations on bosonic states can be completed within a single driving cycle, rather than the several thousand cycles that have been required previously.

This makes the operations both faster and more efficient, while reducing the risk that disturbances will corrupt the information before the process is finished.

It represents an important step towards fault-tolerant quantum computers," — says Lei Du, researcher in Applied Quantum Physics at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. 🚀
