🔥 SGX's bitcoin and ether perpetual futures are now open to U.S. institutions

The Singapore Exchange (SGX) has obtained CFTC authorization to open its crypto perpetual futures to U.S. institutional investors, a milestone the exchange says bridges American trading desks with Asian liquidity pools.

"Under the Regulation 48.10 ruling, we have obtained CFTC authorization to open our crypto products to U.S. institutional access. Previously, U.S. participants couldn't trade these contracts but now they can," — KC Lam, head of crypto derivatives at SGX Group, said.

🔜 Regulation 48.10 is the framework under which the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission allows a registered Foreign Board of Trade (FBOT), an overseas exchange recognized by the CFTC, to give U.S. participants direct access to its trading system, without the exchange needing to separately register as a full U.S.-regulated exchange.

In effect, it lets qualifying foreign platforms open their existing order books to U.S. institutional traders under CFTC oversight, rather than requiring a new, standalone U.S. listing. 🚀

🍎 Apple Watch’s new AI features are normalizing the idea that technology is always listening

At Wednesday’s Surprise and Shine event, the real surprise wasn’t the foldable iPhone, but Apple’s decision to let its watches process live audio and transcribe conversations. With its new watches’ “Audio Intelligence,” “Live Rewind,” and “Siri Recap” features, the company is straddling the line between accessibility and utility on one side and what starts to feel like invasive technology on the other.

On its own, Audio Intelligence seems to be a useful feature for the deaf or hard of hearing, as it can alert Apple Watch wearers to sounds like sirens, alarms, doorbells, babies crying, and more, using on-device AI. This can work even when the wearer’s iPhone is not with them and, in some cases, could provide life-saving assistance, such as when a fire alarm or carbon-monoxide detector goes off.

Apple’s data protections may help, but normalizing listening technology could still be a questionable move for a privacy-conscious company. 🤔

⚡️🇺🇸 Trump to give $500 refunds to nearly 1 million Obamacare customers

The Trump administration will give $500 to nearly 1 million Americans who lost income-based subsidies that helped reduce health insurance costs, according to a Thursday White House announcement. The refunds will go out next month.

“Today’s actions directly refund the Americans most exposed to the higher costs imposed by the Biden Administration’s gross mismanagement of Obamacare,” — according to a White House fact sheet.

🪰 A Simulated Fruit Fly Brain Is Now Trading Crypto

Coinbase programmer Alex Wormuth connected a digital model of a fly’s brain to a trading simulator. The system is based on a scientific map of the fly’s brain containing roughly 139,000 neurons and 50 million connections.

Here’s the wild part: there’s no AI agent and no pre-built trading strategy. Market events are translated into stimuli that the simulated brain can understand: buying is perceived as “sugar,” while selling is perceived as “bitterness.” Neural activity is then converted into commands to buy or sell cryptocurrencies.

"I gave the fly brain $100 to trade bitcoin. Dopamine neurons are stimulated when the fly makes profit. Neuron activity controls buy/sell decisions and makes trades on coinbase. Will the fly get rich?" - Alex Wormuth wrote.

This isn’t Wormuth’s first experiment — he previously used a simulated fly brain to play Doom.

⚡️🧑‍⚖️ New Clarity Act text tweaks DeFi, credit union provisions, but road ahead for bill remains murky

A new version of the Digital Asset Market Clarity offers tweaks to how the key crypto legislation would address activities by DeFi firms and some traditional finance firms engaging in crypto activities.

This latest aspirational draft of the bill includes provisions on when DeFi projects would need to register with the CFTC and get Bank Secrecy Act requirements, makes clear that the DeFi language is only meant to target spot-market and cash transactions in digital commodities (and not prediction markets) and gives credit unions more clarity on their rule with digital assets.

"We have incorporated more than 114 separate provisions at my Democrat colleagues' request, and as a result, this bill is a strong bipartisan product," — said Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis, one of the bill's chief negotiators.

"Unlike rulemaking, legislation gives this industry a lasting solution that shields it from the whiplash of changes in the White House. Since the CFTC and SEC will write rules on digital assets with or without the Clarity Act, I believe a lasting, bipartisan compromise is the best route for America's future." 🇺🇸

The cloture vote, scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 15, will require 60 Senators to support the bill to succeed.

🤑 Ripple Treasury Brings Industry’s First Governed AI for Enterprise Treasury

Ripple announced a major expansion of GSmart, the treasury-native AI capabilities built into Ripple Treasury. Already in production across its enterprise customer base, GSmart embeds AI directly into the policies, data, and workflows treasury teams use every day.

🔘This expansion adds new policy-governed capabilities across forecasting, liquidity, risk, reconciliation, and reporting, helping finance teams make faster, more informed decisions while maintaining the controls and auditability required by enterprise organizations.

🔘Ripple Treasury is building the end-to-end system corporate treasurers and CFOs need to manage both traditional and digital assets from a single platform. Following the launch of native digital asset capabilities earlier this year, GSmart adds intelligence and predictive insights across the treasury lifecycle.

Together, these capabilities give finance teams the ability to view, predict, move and earn on cash and digital asset balances around the world, bringing traditionally fragmented treasury operations into one connected system. 🚀

🤖 Anthropic says it blocked misuse of its AI that could have supported biological weapons

Anthropic has blocked efforts by bad actors to use its AI models for malicious activity such as cyberattacks, surveillance, and research that could have led to biological weapons.

As AI models grow more powerful, elaborate cyberattacks no longer require sophisticated skills and even lone individuals can create threats that would not have been possible even a year ago. Anthropic has added stronger safeguards in its latest models to restrict biological research that could also be used to make weapons.

“The cases we share here aren’t typical misuse, but rather examples of the most notable and novel threat activity we’ve identified to date,” — Anthropic said in its third report since March 2025 describing AI misuse.

📝 The report includes snippets of the malicious code and AI prompts Anthropic said it found, and urges governments and AI competitors to identify and prevent similar abuse.

🇺🇸 Newsom signs online kid safety laws, including rules backed by Sam Altman

Gov. Gavin Newsom greenlit sweeping new child safety rules for social media and AI chatbots, including a law backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The laws will establish what Newsom described as nation-leading guardrails designed to shield young people from potential risks associated with unchecked social media and AI use.

SB 1119 🔜 requires AI chatbots to verify users’ ages, limits kids’ exposure to inappropriate content and restricts AI companies’ ability to advertise to minors.

AB 1709 🔜 will ban social media companies from offering children under 16 access to personalized feeds — also known as “For You” pages — as well as other features designed to maximize screen time, like infinite scrolling and video autoplay. It still allows kids to use social media platforms if those features are deactivated.

AB 2 🔜 threatens fines of up to $1 million per child in cases where tech platforms are found liable for fostering anxiety, depression or other child harms. The bill also triples payouts in certain cases where courts find children or families are owed significant damages, meaning companies could be forced to pay more than $1 million.

In total, Newsom approved 13 laws relating to youth online safety and privacy Thursday.

🧠 Injectable nanodevices could provide effective treatment for drug-resistant glioblastoma

The brain cancer glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive and treatment-resistant cancers known to medicine, carrying a median survival of just 12-15 months, even with the best available care.

Now, researchers at the MIT Media Lab have developed injectable nanoantennas, each about one-hundredth the width of human hair, that can be magnetically activated to create localized therapeutic electric fields that target and kill brain cancer cells without damaging healthy brain tissue.

📝 Using cells derived from this tissue in the laboratory, the researchers demonstrated that HITMAN eliminated 52.2% of these drug-resistant cancer cells — more than five times than that achieved by the standard chemotherapy drug temozolomide (TMZ) — while leaving healthy neurons and brain-supporting astrocytes unharmed.

“In laboratory and animal studies, this approach significantly reduced tumor growth and extended survival without detectable side effects, highlighting its potential as a precise and safe brain cancer therapy,” — says Deblina Sarkar, associate professor and AT&T Career Development Chair at the MIT Media Lab.

🇨🇦Canada’s OSFI Confirms Tokenized Deposits Equal Traditional Bank Funds

Canada’s banking regulator has sent one of the strongest signals yet that blockchain-based bank money can fit into the current banking system.

🔘The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) said tokenized deposits aren’t legally different from regular deposits, so the tech used to represent them doesn’t create a whole new legal category on its own.

🔘OSFI focuses on what a financial product is, rather than how it’s built or delivered. Therefore, a bank deposit doesn’t turn into a different kind of financial product just because it’s tracked as tokens on a blockchain.

❗️That distinction could clear a big obstacle for Canadian banks wanting to experiment with blockchain-based payments and treasury tools.

However, this isn’t a free pass for every blockchain product, as OSFI said federally regulated banks still have to follow all relevant laws and rules, including its requirements around technology risk, cyber risk, and third-party risk.

Banks should also check in with their OSFI supervisor before launching anything new.

🥽 Polish developer builds app that detects nearby Meta smart glasses

Polish software developer Paweł Szydłowski, developed an iPhone app called Zuckoff that detects nearby Meta smart glasses and estimates their distance after seeing videos of people using the devices to secretly film and identify unsuspecting strangers, amid growing privacy concerns.

The app scans Bluetooth signals from nearby devices and checks them for identifiers linked to known models of smart glasses. Its main scanning screen shows users the estimated distance of nearby smart glasses, while a paid version can run in the background and send notifications when compatible glasses are detected.

🤑 Clearpool is entering its next growth phase, expanding to the XRP Ledger

This proposal seeks approval to expand the protocol to the XRP Ledger and rebrand the token from CPOOL to CLEAR.

The existing CPOOL token will migrate to CLEAR on a 1:1 basis, while additional CLEAR will be issued to fuel this next chapter of growth. The protocol aims to become the Morpho for private credit on the XRP Ledger by capturing the institutional yield opportunity on XRPL and continuing to increase TVL and secure institutional adoption.

CPOOL’s rebrand to CLEAR reflects Clearpool's evolution from single-borrower liquidity pools into a multi-borrower settlement and risk-transparency layer for institutional credit. A new ticker that is a commitment as much as a label: terms, allocations, and risk made transparent and auditable, not buried in a black box.

"XRPL is one of the most established networks, with institutional credit still largely untapped. We're bringing real-world, institutional-ready lending infrastructure, built natively on XRPL. A massive opportunity, and we're going after it," — Clearpool said. 🚀
