Machine learning models are paving the way to catalogue and even mimic the sounds animals make to communicate with each other, with researchers touting the technology as a way to better understand the world of animals.

But “one risk that is currently not taken into account in research ethics is the concern that we might be violating the privacy of animals by collecting data on their vocalizations and movements,” according to researchers in an article published in Springer Nature.

“An interest in privacy is an interest in controlling how you appear to others, and the complex social lives of many nonhuman animals offer strong support for thinking animals have this interest.”

The ability to “speak” with animals also could pose dangers to the natural world, experts said. The controversy involves a technique known as “playback,” which is the practice of broadcasting recorded animal calls in the wild.

This was announced on September 5 by Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Igor Krasnov at the Forum of Chairmen of the Supreme Courts of the BRICS countries.

The goal of the project is to combine all existing judicial services and ensure their seamless integration with a single portal of public services. The system will be based on Russian technical and software solutions.

🤖 OpenAI Says It Has Solved a Millennium Prize Problem — a Holy Grail of Math

OpenAI said that one of its internal models has solved the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, a fundamental question about the rules that describe how liquids and gases move.

For nearly a century, mathematicians have tried to determine whether smooth solutions to the equations describing three-dimensional fluid motion always remain smooth or if they ever break down.

To put it less mathematically: On paper, can water blow up? 🤔

📝 OpenAI says its model found a scenario in which “an initially smooth fluid at rest can develop a singularity in a finite time.” In the proof, a spaghetti-like vortex gets smaller while spinning faster and faster, its speed growing without limit in what mathematicians call “finite-time blowup.”

OpenAI published its findings along with the 165-page proof and a formalization that verifies the argument step by step. The company says it took as many as 10,000 AI agents working together on the problem about 88 hours to find the solution.

🛡 Ethereum makes quantum resistance a top priority with a 2029 deadline

The Ethereum Foundation has given itself until December 2029 to make Ethereum resistant to quantum computers across the parts of the network that process transactions, secure validators and store data.

🔘The Foundation’s Protocol cluster is planning for that 2030 threat horizon, but has locked in a 2029 completion target. That deadline stands at least until January 2027, when outside experts will reassess how fast quantum computing is actually moving.

🔘The upcoming Hegotá upgrade will not provide quantum resistance itself but is intended to keep five subsequent hard forks and related cryptographic changes on schedule.

Planned protections include new account and validator signature systems, a public-key registry and a fallback designed to keep Ethereum operating with reduced guarantees if quantum computers advance sooner than expected.
