Forschungszentrum Jรผlich and Siegen-based start-up eleQtron have officially inaugurated the quantum computer JION. It will be made available to research institutions and industry through the JUNIQ user infrastructure, enabling hybrid computations with Jรผlichโs supercomputers. NRW Minister-President Hendrik Wรผst and NRW Science Minister Ina Brandes hailed JION as a technological milestone.
JION (โJรผlich trapped-ION quantum computerโ) is a digital, gate-based trapped-ion quantum computer. Its qubits consist of ionized ytterbium atoms, which are held in a vacuum by electromagnetic fields and precisely controlled for computations. Unlike superconducting systems, the quantum processor does not need to be operated at temperatures close to absolute zero.
To control the qubits, JION utilizes the magnetic gradient induced coupling (MAGIC) technology developed in Siegen. Microwaves and deliberately generated variations in the magnetic field allow the qubits to be controlled individually and connected directly to one another. This simplifies control and could facilitate the development of larger, more powerful quantum systems in the future.

Advancements in AI may soon allow humans to talk with animals, but some groups claim the research could be violating the animalsโ right to privacy. Machine learning models are paving the way to catalogue and even mimic the sounds animals make to communicate with each other, with researchers touting the technology as a way to better understand the world of animals.
But โone risk that is currently not taken into account in research ethics is the concern that we might be violating the privacy of animals by collecting data on their vocalizations and movements,โ according to researchers in an article published in Springer Nature.
โAn interest in privacy is an interest in controlling how you appear to others, and the complex social lives of many nonhuman animals offer strong support for thinking animals have this interest.โ
The ability to โspeakโ with animals also could pose dangers to the natural world, experts said. The controversy involves a technique known as โplayback,โ which is the practice of broadcasting recorded animal calls in the wild.

India spent the past decade transforming how money moves, with its home-grown real-time payments system changing the way millions of people pay. Now, it is preparing for a bigger leap as AI reshapes finance.
AI could take Indiaโs financial system beyond simply processing transactions, helping assess borrowers, detect fraud, tailor financial products and eventually make payments on behalf of consumers. But giving machines such a big role increases risks of bias, fraud, cybersecurity, data privacy and accountability.
Those questions will take center stage at the annual Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, where policymakers, bankers, technology companies and fintech founders will gather to debate what comes after the Unified Payments Interface, which unleashed a digital-payments revolution.
The conference, running from Sept. 8-11, will evaluate the potential impact of agentic AI, alongside tokenization and quantum technology.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged Ursula von der Leyen to back European Union-level legislation to ban social media for children under 15 after his own efforts failed in France.
In a letter dated 29 August to von der Leyen he stated it was โnow essential to go further and harmonise this provision through a new European text.โ

Visa will pair its settlement data with onchain lending infrastructure, giving lenders greater insight into the financial performance of digital asset-focused fintech firms and card issuers. The program aims to speed up borrowing for these businesses as they grow rapidly.
โStablecoin-linked cards are in hypergrowth mode,โ โ Cuy Sheffield, head of crypto at Visa.
โWeโve been running a pilot with a company called Credit Coop that is enabling a credit facility for stablecoin-linked card providers, which we think is a positive step forward for how onchain credit can start to come into our network,โ โ Sheffield said.

Chinese EV maker XPENG unveiled the world's first fully automated production line for advanced humanoid robots at its Guangzhou facility, with over 80% of core processes handled by machines drawing from its automotive know-how.
"This was uncharted territory, and we solved it from scratch. The commissioning of our production line means humanoid robots are now ready to scale up and step into the real world," โ XPENG said.
Mass production starts by end of 2026 for internal use, with customer deliveries in China and abroad planned for 2027, amid similar scaling by Tesla's Optimus program.

Circle has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Tazapay, a Singapore-headquartered B2B cross-border payments infrastructure company focused on serving payment service providers and financial institutions.
"Stablecoin settlement is becoming core infrastructure in the global economy and combining USDC with Tazapayโs world-class banking relationships, local payout rails, and institutional customer base will accelerate worldwide USDC adoption,โ โ said Jeremy Allaire, Co-Founder, CEO, and Chairman at Circle.
The acquisition will accelerate Circle's mission to build the infrastructure layer for global digital finance. Tazapay brings over $25 billion of annualized payment volume, 60+ banking and fintech partners, local payout rails covering over 100 markets, adding scale to Circleโs payments infrastructure.
Approximately 60% of Tazapay's transaction volume already includes stablecoins.

Google DeepMind is introducing AlphaGenome Atlas: a platform containing predictions for the effects of 9 billion single-nucleotide variants โ every single-letter change possible โ in the human genome. It is the most comprehensive catalogue of how genetic mutations affect molecular biology, and it is available for academic research through an intuitive and free-to-use website portal.
DNA is the language of life. Mastering it is a grand challenge that could transform our ability to understand biology and treat disease. But progress has been limited by a fundamental problem: interpreting how genetic variations impact biology at a molecular level. With roughly 9 billion possible single-letter mutations in the human genome, testing each one in the lab is practically impossible.
Google DeepMind has already made progress on this challenge with AlphaGenome, an AI model that can predict how genetic variants impact biological processes. AlphaGenome is helpful for analyzing specific variants and has found widespread use in research.

Stellar now hosts more than $4 billion in tokenized RWAs. Those assets move on infrastructure that stays online around the clock. The markets they represent often do not.
On Stellar, a perpetuals market or vault can continue marking equity-linked and commodity exposure through weekends and holidays, when the cash market is closed. Collateral values, risk controls, and portfolio accounting can continue updating instead of waiting for the next session open.

Russia has begun to create a new automated Digital Justice system, which involves the introduction of AI technologies at all stages of legal proceedings. This was announced on September 5 by Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Igor Krasnov at the Forum of Chairmen of the Supreme Courts of the BRICS countries.
The goal of the project is to combine all existing judicial services and ensure their seamless integration with a single portal of public services. The system will be based on Russian technical and software solutions.
"We are talking about transcribing court records, analyzing evidence, and forming document templates," โ Krasnov said.

OpenAI said that one of its internal models has solved the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, a fundamental question about the rules that describe how liquids and gases move.
For nearly a century, mathematicians have tried to determine whether smooth solutions to the equations describing three-dimensional fluid motion always remain smooth or if they ever break down.
To put it less mathematically: On paper, can water blow up?
๐ OpenAI says its model found a scenario in which โan initially smooth fluid at rest can develop a singularity in a finite time.โ In the proof, a spaghetti-like vortex gets smaller while spinning faster and faster, its speed growing without limit in what mathematicians call โfinite-time blowup.โ
OpenAI published its findings along with the 165-page proof and a formalization that verifies the argument step by step. The company says it took as many as 10,000 AI agents working together on the problem about 88 hours to find the solution.

The Ethereum Foundation has given itself until December 2029 to make Ethereum resistant to quantum computers across the parts of the network that process transactions, secure validators and store data.
Planned protections include new account and validator signature systems, a public-key registry and a fallback designed to keep Ethereum operating with reduced guarantees if quantum computers advance sooner than expected.
