๐Ÿง—๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธClimbers rescued after using AI to plan 8-hour mountain hike and getting stuck for days

As per Siskiyou County Sheriffโ€™s Office, the three hikers set off three men summited the mountain on Sunday, August 31, and required help from the sheriffโ€™s office during their descent as one of them suffered an injury and they ran out of phone battery. The group also went off-course from where theyโ€™d been instructed, using sight and a Garmin watch to navigate instead.

โ€œThis was a critical misstep, as they were advised by Gemini to bring far less food and water than their group required, especially when their planned 8-hour ascent became a multi-day ordeal.โ€

The Sheriffโ€™s Office and US Forest Service warned hikers against relying on AI and hiking apps to plan their treks, urging people to contact them.

โ€œWe relied too much on AI rather than our own critical thinking,โ€ โ€” the hikers told the Forest Service, also admitting theyโ€™d used YouTube videos as a form of recon.

๐Ÿš˜ Carmakers Have a New Idea to Boost EV Range: Add a Gas Engine

The auto industry has a new solution to Americansโ€™ fear that electric vehicles will run out of juice: a gasoline engine. Hyundai, Ford Motor and Jeep parent Stellantis are among the first U.S.-market automakers planning to roll out a new kind of plug-in vehicle called an extended-range EV.

It is a fully electric car with the security blanket of a gas-powered generator to charge the battery, if needed โ€” ensuring you wonโ€™t end up stranded as long as a gas station is nearby.

๐Ÿค– Quantum-proof platform aces US Army`s battlefield experiment, achieves TRL-7

The US Army has tested a quantum-resistant cybersecurity platform under live battlefield conditions, demonstrating its ability to protect tactical communications from emerging quantum threats.

QuSecureโ€™s QuProtect R3 was deployed during Project Convergence Capstone 6 (PCC6), an annual Army experiment held at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California. Operated by soldiers during the exercise, the system provided secure communications, cryptographic agility, and an inventory of cryptographic assets used across tactical mission systems.

โ—๏ธThe TRL-7 milestone arrives as federal agencies and defense components align with binding timelines under Executive Order 14412, which mandates the complete migration of High Value Assets (HVAs) and high-impact systems to PQC for key establishment by December 31, 2030, and digital signatures by December 31, 2031.

Led by Joey Lupo (Product Manager) and Brian Cunningham (EVP of Growth and Strategy), QuSecure confirms that the QuProtect R3 platform is immediately available for TLS modernization, cryptographic inventorying, and PQC deployment across federal agencies, military branches, and commercial critical infrastructure.

๐Ÿงฌ Life uses 4 DNA letters. Scientists just made 8 work

All known life on Earth relies on the same four-letter genetic alphabet. Researchers at the University of California San Diego have now shown that one of biology's most important enzymes can accurately read and transcribe a much larger version containing 8 genetic letters.

The finding suggests that cells can use their existing molecular machinery to handle synthetic genetic information. That marks an important step toward a long-standing goal in synthetic biology: expanding the language of DNA beyond the 4 letters found in nature. In the future, such systems could help scientists engineer biological machinery that carries out new functions or produces compounds that do not naturally exist.

โšก๏ธ๐Ÿ’ธ DBS and Citi complete weekend USD payment via Swiftโ€™s Digital Ledger using tokenized deposits

DBS (D05) and Citi (C) completed the first cross-border USD payment over a weekend using tokenized deposits on Swift's Digital Ledger. The transaction, executed on Sept. 5 between DBS in Singapore and Citi's New York office, settled in minutes rather than the industry norm of up to two business days.

โ—๏ธIt is the second confirmed live transaction on Swift's blockchain ledger, following HSBC and Standard Chartered's first live cross-border transfer in August.

The back-to-back tests come as Swift's $1.5 quadrillion network faces pressure from stablecoins and tokenized deposits that settle around the clock, raising the question of whether the 53-year-old messaging network can adapt fast enough to remain relevant. Swift rolled out its blockchain ledger in July with 17 banks.

"Processing a live transaction over a weekend demonstrates that always-on cross-border payments are already a reality," โ€” said Mridula Iyer, Citi's head of services for Asia South.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ›ฐ Europeโ€™s Top Carriers in Talks for Satellite-to-Mobile Venture

A group of Europeโ€™s biggest mobile operators are in early talks to create a consortium to bid on satellite spectrum and offer direct-to-mobile service, which would rival Elon Muskโ€™s Starlink service on the continent.

Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange SA, Vodafone Group Plc and Telefonica SA would jointly bid for a share of airwaves that the European Union has proposed reserving for a local operator, a plan aimed at increasing sovereign satellite capabilities. No final decisions on the consortium or plans to bid have been made.

๐Ÿ’Š AI-Discovered Drug Reverses Aging Markers in Study

Insilico Medicine, a clinical-stage company focused on generative AI-driven drug discovery and development, announced the publication of a new study conducted in collaboration with an international team of scientists from Harvard Medical School, Stanford University, The Broad Institute, RWTH Aachen University, Peking University and Westlake University.

๐Ÿ“ Using longitudinal Olink proteomic data (CNCB OMIX accession: OMIX008341) collected during a Phase IIa clinical trial of rentosertib, researchers evaluated biological age using 6 internationally recognized, independently developed proteomic aging clocks.

๐Ÿ”œ All 6 models consistently indicated a reduction in predicted biological age among patients treated with rentosertib. In addition, the Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), the essential measure of lung function declining with age, showed promising dose-dependent reversal compared to placebo aligning with the proteomic aging clock age reversal.

โ—๏ธRecently published in Nature Biotechnology, the study represents the first clinical evaluation of a potentially first-in-class drug candidate featuring both an AI-discovered target with relevance to aging and disease biology and an AI-designed molecule, rather than a repurposed generic drug such as rapamycin or metformin.

The findings also provide a proof-of-concept framework for integrating aging biomarkers into standard clinical trials to accelerate the discovery of geroprotective drugs and longevity therapeutics. ๐Ÿš€

The results will be presented by first author Alex Zhavoronkov, founder and CEO of Insilico Medicine, at the Nature conference: Redefining Healthcare in the Age of AI, to be held at Sorbonne University in Paris on September 8, 2026.

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿค– Meet JION: Trapped-ion quantum computer for hybrid quantum-HPC computations

Forschungszentrum Jรผlich and Siegen-based start-up eleQtron have officially inaugurated the quantum computer JION. It will be made available to research institutions and industry through the JUNIQ user infrastructure, enabling hybrid computations with Jรผlichโ€™s supercomputers. NRW Minister-President Hendrik Wรผst and NRW Science Minister Ina Brandes hailed JION as a technological milestone.

JION (โ€œJรผlich trapped-ION quantum computerโ€
) is a digital, gate-based trapped-ion quantum computer. Its qubits consist of ionized ytterbium atoms, which are held in a vacuum by electromagnetic fields and precisely controlled for computations. Unlike superconducting systems, the quantum processor does not need to be operated at temperatures close to absolute zero.

To control the qubits, JION utilizes the magnetic gradient induced coupling (MAGIC) technology developed in Siegen. Microwaves and deliberately generated variations in the magnetic field allow the qubits to be controlled individually and connected directly to one another. This simplifies control and could facilitate the development of larger, more powerful quantum systems in the future.

๐Ÿค– AI may soon allow humans to talk with animals โ€” but some say it could violate their right to privacy

Advancements in AI may soon allow humans to talk with animals, but some groups claim the research could be violating the animalsโ€™ right to privacy. Machine learning models are paving the way to catalogue and even mimic the sounds animals make to communicate with each other, with researchers touting the technology as a way to better understand the world of animals.

But โ€œone risk that is currently not taken into account in research ethics is the concern that we might be violating the privacy of animals by collecting data on their vocalizations and movements,โ€ according to researchers in an article published in Springer Nature.

โ€œAn interest in privacy is an interest in controlling how you appear to others, and the complex social lives of many nonhuman animals offer strong support for thinking animals have this interest.โ€

The ability to โ€œspeakโ€ with animals also could pose dangers to the natural world, experts said. The controversy involves a technique known as โ€œplayback,โ€ which is the practice of broadcasting recorded animal calls in the wild.

โšก๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ India Eyes AI for Next Finance Leap After Digital Payments Boom

India spent the past decade transforming how money moves, with its home-grown real-time payments system changing the way millions of people pay. Now, it is preparing for a bigger leap as AI reshapes finance.

AI could take Indiaโ€™s financial system beyond simply processing transactions, helping assess borrowers, detect fraud, tailor financial products and eventually make payments on behalf of consumers. But giving machines such a big role increases risks of bias, fraud, cybersecurity, data privacy and accountability.

Those questions will take center stage at the annual Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, where policymakers, bankers, technology companies and fintech founders will gather to debate what comes after the Unified Payments Interface, which unleashed a digital-payments revolution.

The conference, running from Sept. 8-11, will evaluate the potential impact of agentic AI, alongside tokenization and quantum technology. ๐Ÿš€
