In 'An Alien Mind,' Pachocki argues that rapid AI capability gains are outrunning current alignment and monitoring tools, urging voluntary slowdowns and global coordination until safety standards solidify.
"And I believe that international coordination on future AI development needs to become a top priority for governments around the world.
Machine intelligence playing a larger and larger role in its own development process is a natural conclusion of sustained technological progress. If AI progress continues, machine recursive self-improvement (RSI) will be at the very core of future scientific discovery๐ ," โ Pachocki said.
He draws from internal results expecting continued fast progress toward recursive self-improvement, where AI drives its own advances, and notes that methods like chain-of-thought reasoning are losing reliability as models grow smarter.

๐ง๐ปโโ๏ธClimbers rescued after using AI to plan 8-hour mountain hike and getting stuck for days
As per Siskiyou County Sheriffโs Office, the three hikers set off three men summited the mountain on Sunday, August 31, and required help from the sheriffโs office during their descent as one of them suffered an injury and they ran out of phone battery. The group also went off-course from where theyโd been instructed, using sight and a Garmin watch to navigate instead.
The Sheriffโs Office and US Forest Service warned hikers against relying on AI and hiking apps to plan their treks, urging people to contact them.

The group also went off-course from where theyโd been instructed, using sight and a Garmin watch to navigate instead.
โThis was a critical misstep, as they were advised by Gemini to bring far less food and water than their group required, especially when their planned 8-hour ascent became a multi-day ordeal.โ
The Sheriffโs Office and US Forest Service warned hikers against relying on AI and hiking apps to plan their treks, urging people to contact them.
โWe relied too much on AI rather than our own critical thinking,โ โ the hikers told the Forest Service, also admitting theyโd used YouTube videos as a form of recon.

๐ Carmakers Have a New Idea to Boost EV Range: Add a Gas Engine
The auto industry has a new solution to Americansโ fear that electric vehicles will run out of juice: a gasoline engine. Hyundai, Ford Motor and Jeep parent Stellantis are among the first U.S.-market automakers planning to roll out a new kind of plug-in vehicle called an extended-range EV.
It is a fully electric car with the security blanket of a gas-powered generator to charge the battery, if needed โ ensuring you wonโt end up stranded as long as a gas station is nearby.

๐งฌ Life uses 4 DNA letters. Scientists just made 8 work
All known life on Earth relies on the same four-letter genetic alphabet. Researchers at the University of California San Diego have now shown that one of biology's most important enzymes can accurately read and transcribe a much larger version containing 8 genetic letters.
The finding suggests that cells can use their existing molecular machinery to handle synthetic genetic information. That marks an important step toward a long-standing goal in synthetic biology: expanding the language of DNA beyond the 4 letters found in nature. In the future, such systems could help scientists engineer biological machinery that carries out new functions or produces compounds that do not naturally exist.

DBS (D05) and Citi (C) completed the first cross-border USD payment over a weekend using tokenized deposits on Swift's Digital Ledger. The transaction, executed on Sept. 5 between DBS in Singapore and Citi's New York office, settled in minutes rather than the industry norm of up to two business days.
The back-to-back tests come as Swift's $1.5 quadrillion network faces pressure from stablecoins and tokenized deposits that settle around the clock, raising the question of whether the 53-year-old messaging network can adapt fast enough to remain relevant. Swift rolled out its blockchain ledger in July with 17 banks.
"Processing a live transaction over a weekend demonstrates that always-on cross-border payments are already a reality," โ said Mridula Iyer, Citi's head of services for Asia South.

A group of Europeโs biggest mobile operators are in early talks to create a consortium to bid on satellite spectrum and offer direct-to-mobile service, which would rival Elon Muskโs Starlink service on the continent.
Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange SA, Vodafone Group Plc and Telefonica SA would jointly bid for a share of airwaves that the European Union has proposed reserving for a local operator, a plan aimed at increasing sovereign satellite capabilities. No final decisions on the consortium or plans to bid have been made.

Forschungszentrum Jรผlich and Siegen-based start-up eleQtron have officially inaugurated the quantum computer JION. It will be made available to research institutions and industry through the JUNIQ user infrastructure, enabling hybrid computations with Jรผlichโs supercomputers. NRW Minister-President Hendrik Wรผst and NRW Science Minister Ina Brandes hailed JION as a technological milestone.
JION (โJรผlich trapped-ION quantum computerโ) is a digital, gate-based trapped-ion quantum computer. Its qubits consist of ionized ytterbium atoms, which are held in a vacuum by electromagnetic fields and precisely controlled for computations. Unlike superconducting systems, the quantum processor does not need to be operated at temperatures close to absolute zero.
To control the qubits, JION utilizes the magnetic gradient induced coupling (MAGIC) technology developed in Siegen. Microwaves and deliberately generated variations in the magnetic field allow the qubits to be controlled individually and connected directly to one another. This simplifies control and could facilitate the development of larger, more powerful quantum systems in the future.

Advancements in AI may soon allow humans to talk with animals, but some groups claim the research could be violating the animalsโ right to privacy. Machine learning models are paving the way to catalogue and even mimic the sounds animals make to communicate with each other, with researchers touting the technology as a way to better understand the world of animals.
But โone risk that is currently not taken into account in research ethics is the concern that we might be violating the privacy of animals by collecting data on their vocalizations and movements,โ according to researchers in an article published in Springer Nature.
โAn interest in privacy is an interest in controlling how you appear to others, and the complex social lives of many nonhuman animals offer strong support for thinking animals have this interest.โ
The ability to โspeakโ with animals also could pose dangers to the natural world, experts said. The controversy involves a technique known as โplayback,โ which is the practice of broadcasting recorded animal calls in the wild.

India spent the past decade transforming how money moves, with its home-grown real-time payments system changing the way millions of people pay. Now, it is preparing for a bigger leap as AI reshapes finance.
AI could take Indiaโs financial system beyond simply processing transactions, helping assess borrowers, detect fraud, tailor financial products and eventually make payments on behalf of consumers. But giving machines such a big role increases risks of bias, fraud, cybersecurity, data privacy and accountability.
Those questions will take center stage at the annual Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, where policymakers, bankers, technology companies and fintech founders will gather to debate what comes after the Unified Payments Interface, which unleashed a digital-payments revolution.
The conference, running from Sept. 8-11, will evaluate the potential impact of agentic AI, alongside tokenization and quantum technology.
