The Defense Innovation Unit and Honeywell have successfully flown an aircraft for more than four hours from Seattle to Alaska over the Pacific without GPS, using quantum magnetic navigation. The MagNav program launched in spring 2024 under the name "Transition of Quantum Sensing." European Commission President Ursula von der Leye, who is visiting Greenland on Sunday and Monday, has said the bloc is preparing a "massive European investment surge" aimed in part at strengthening Arctic security. The European Commission has proposed allocating €530 million to Greenland under the EU budget covering 2028 to 2034.

The Commission has linked the proposal directly to Greenland’s "growing geostrategic importance in the Arctic." Von der Leyen is also expected to sign a joint declaration between the EU and Greenland on Monday. An additional €200 million in funding is set to be announced during the visit.
