In January 2026, Tim Andrews, who had received a genetically edited pig kidney in January 2025, became the recipient of a donated human kidney. His case represents the longest dialysis-free survival following porcine (pig) kidney xenotransplantation in a living human and the first transition to human kidney transplantation.
The authors report that Andrews, who was 66 at the time of xenotransplantation, successfully lived with the genetically edited kidney for 271 days — during which he did not need dialysis — before receiving a human kidney from a donor.
“The organ shortage is the greatest crisis we have right now in transplantation,” — said lead author Leonardo Riella, the HMS Harold and Ellen Danser Associate Professor of Surgery .
“Our vision is that xenotransplantation could help address this gap — initially as a bridge to get patients off dialysis while they wait for a human donor kidney, and potentially, as we establish long-term safety and durability, as a destination therapy in its own right,” — he said.
The results were published on Sept. 3 in The Lancet by Harvard Medical School.

OpenAI said on Saturday that its agents had appropriated wiki sites as impromptu message boards, adding that more transparency was needed around such incidents.
The statement follows after a swarm of rogue OpenAI agents hijacked a German website this spring and transformed it into a bulletin board for other AI agents. OpenAI officials learned of the incident weeks ago but kept it under wraps as executives grappled with the fallout from the July breach of the open source repository Hugging Face.
Companies are racing to build increasingly autonomous agents capable of carrying out complex, valuable tasks, yet evidence is mounting that those systems may also learn to bend rules, exploit loopholes and coordinate with one another in ways developers neither anticipated nor intended.

“That’s one of the most objective ways any alien species visiting us would measure how much progress we’ve made as a civilization.
Type I is how well a civilization harnesses the power available on its planet. Type II is how much of its star’s power it harnesses, and Type III is how much of the galaxy’s power it harnesses.
Right now, we’re very low on the Kardashev Type I scale. We’re harnessing almost none of our star’s power. We don’t even know how to do Type III, really. AI will figure it out.”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, together with the Crown Prosecution Service of England & Wales and the National Crime Agency of the U.K. announced the signing of a MOU between the Scam Center Strike Force and its U.K. counterparts.
The MOU is the first-of-its kind related to international cooperation on disabling scam centers committing cryptocurrency and cyber-enabled investment fraud (CIF) and other schemes, which are ravaging the American people of approximately $10 billion in losses per year.
"The U.K. is one of our oldest allies and partners. We've stood side by side to bring down global threats in multiple wars, and today we commit to stand together in the war on transnational organized crime, " — said U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

California's legislature has approved a first-of-its-kind state law setting rules for how lawyers are permitted to use generative AI in their work. Both chambers in the California legislature approved the current version of the measure. The bill, SB 574, now goes to Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom to sign or veto.
Under California's measure, a lawyer "shall not delegate the practice of law" to generative AI. Lawyers would be required to take "reasonable steps" to verify the accuracy of all materials produced using AI, including case citations, and correct any false or hallucinated output in any AI-generated material they use.
Lawyers also would be required to disclose the use of AI for documents submitted in court and would be barred from entering confidential or other nonpublic information into certain generative AI systems. Arbitrators under the bill also could not delegate any decision-making to an AI tool.

In blockchain networks, transactions must be proposed, validated, and committed to the chain through a consensus protocol, a process by which independent, potentially unreliable nodes agree on a single, coherent system state.
The strategy we present is an addition/augmentation approach, in which new edges are added based on different constructions.
While this paper focuses on the XRP Ledger, these results suggest promising avenues for applying augmentation strategies to other decentralized networks and for studying their effects on robustness.

Nuvanté Technologies Ltd, a digital money clearing infrastructure company, has announced that in August 2026 it developed a prototype for stablecoin clearing tested in the Bank of England Synchronisation Lab, built on the Stellar network.
Nuvanté’s participation in the Lab focused on multi-money issuance and redemption, including stablecoin-to-stablecoin and stablecoin-to-fiat flows. The project used the Stellar network to support the movement and orchestration of digital money.
“Stablecoins are becoming core payment infrastructure, but the market still lacks neutral clearing rails that allow issuers, banks and payment firms to exchange digital money safely and efficiently,” — said Michael Chapman, Founder and CEO of Nuvanté.
“Through our work in the Bank of England Synchronisation Lab, we demonstrated how regulated stablecoin clearing, interoperability and synchronised settlement could operate in a central-bank settlement environment.”
“As stablecoins continue to scale the market needs safe, trusted and interoperable settlement infrastructure. The Stellar network was built for regulated finance and Nuvanté’s work in the Bank of England Synchronisation Lab is the kind of real-world financial use case the network was designed to support."
The announcement comes as the Bank of England continues to progress its RTGS roadmap, including the development of synchronisation capabilities designed to extend atomic settlement in central bank money to a wider set of asset markets and transaction types.

The Defense Innovation Unit and Honeywell have successfully flown an aircraft for more than four hours from Seattle to Alaska over the Pacific without GPS, using quantum magnetic navigation. The groundbreaking flight test was a success for MagNav, DIU's magnetic navigation program, and is a critical advancement for the future of aviation and national security.
The MagNav program launched in spring 2024 under the name "Transition of Quantum Sensing." MagNav systems use quantum sensors to read the Earth's natural magnetic field, turning the planet's crust into an invisible, unjammable map that allows pilots to navigate safely regardless of weather, time of day or GPS availability.

The reception workers at the Henn na – or “Weird” – Hotel gaze blankly at guests. Some of the uncanny staff members look like Japanese women. Others are talking Velociraptors. All of them are robots.
In fact, the novelty Tokyo hotel is known for being the first in the world to be “run by” machines. They speak different languages and carry out front-of-house tasks such as greetings, check-in and tourist information. Bosses have claimed the robots could eventually yield savings of 75% on labour costs.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leye, who is visiting Greenland on Sunday and Monday, has said the bloc is preparing a "massive European investment surge" aimed in part at strengthening Arctic security. The European Commission has proposed allocating €530 million to Greenland under the EU budget covering 2028 to 2034.
The Commission has linked the proposal directly to Greenland’s "growing geostrategic importance in the Arctic." Von der Leyen is also expected to sign a joint declaration between the EU and Greenland on Monday. An additional €200 million in funding is set to be announced during the visit.
