Legato emerged from stealth on Wednesday with $12 million in funding and a first look at Legato Frames, AI-powered hearing glasses that embed voice-separation technology into standard eyewear arms. The product is scheduled to ship later this fall.
Hearing loss affects an estimated 50 million adults in the U.S., but only around 20% of those with diagnosed hearing loss seek treatment. The pitch is to convert hearing care from a stigmatized medical purchase into a routine eyewear one.
“Our goal is to make hearing as ubiquitous as vision,” — Mehul Trivedi, Legato co-founder, said.

IBM has completed its acquisition of HRL Laboratories, a leading research and development institution whose expertise spans quantum computing, quantum sensing, advanced communications, electronics, manufacturing, and materials science.
HRL also brings capabilities in quantum sensing, quantum materials, cryogenics, control electronics, packaging, and interconnect technologies that are expected to strengthen IBM's quantum hardware roadmap and support continued innovation across the quantum technology stack.
IBM’s roadmap includes its fault-tolerant quantum computer IBM Quantum Starling, expected by 2029 to perform 100 million quantum operations and deliver significantly greater computational capability than today's quantum computers. Starling is expected to be followed by Blue Jay, IBM's next-generation fault-tolerant quantum computer, targeted for the mid-2030s.

MTN Group Ltd., Africa’s largest mobile-phone operator, and Dubai-based tycoon Tarek Al Ashram will develop data centers to power AI on the continent. Al Ashram, who is also the co-founder of KKR & Co.-backed Gulf Data Hub, will use his own investment firm to back the new Africa Data Hub Holding Ltd. venture.
“We see significant potential to bring our experience in developing and operating large-scale data centre platforms to African markets,” — said Al Ashram said. Africa Data Hub will “help shape that growth,” he said.

The world's first patient to have brain surgery with live AI assistance has successfully had his tumour removed. Rhys Hibbert from Bedfordshire could have lost his sight without the operation, said surgeons at University College London Hospital.
The AI tool analysed a video feed of the operation as it happened and advised surgeons on how to avoid crucial but hidden vessels and nerves in the brain. It allowed them to safely remove as much of the tumour as possible.
"It is trained on more operations than most surgeons see or do in a lifetime and can act like an expert second pair of eyes," — said Prof Hani Marcus, who helped carry out the procedure.

Nvidia has agreed to buy Hugging Face, a repository of open-source AI models, for $12.9 billion. A deal of that size would mark one of Nvidia's largest acquisitions to date.
It would also give Nvidia control of Hugging Face — which hosts open-source large language models and datasets — at a time when builders of closed-source models such as Anthropic and OpenAI are seeking to create their own chips as an alternative to Nvidia's graphics processing units.

Tempe, Arizona, shut down its network of Flock Safety license plate readers and plans to terminate its contract with the surveillance company, citing privacy risks and cases of alleged misuse reported by other cities. The city said that it would not replace the system with technology from another provider. Tempe operated 33 Flock cameras.
"These cameras have helped our police officers do their jobs, and we don't discount that," — Mayor Corey Woods said. "But the risk of misuse is too great. We have to be able to provide public safety in a way that maintains the trust of our community. For Tempe, that means taking these cameras down."

Over a hundred tech companies have signed an open letter urging both the private and public sectors to work together to defend themselves from AI-related cyber threats.
The letter — which was also signed by prominent cyber firms like CrowdStrike, Okta, and Fortinet, as well as prominent financial institutions and internet infrastructure firms — calls for the adoption of new forms of cyber defense, while also encouraging governments at the "local, national, and international levels" to collaborate on security.
"In the coming months, AI-enabled cyber attacks will become far more widespread and sophisticated as models around the world become increasingly capable," — the letter states.

Biorobotics engineers have been working on the design of six-legged cyborg insects with cameras and miniature medical injectors for search and rescue missions. The roaches are designed to deliver emergency aid to people trapped in collapsed buildings, caves or other places too dangerous for rescuers to reach.
The “paraborgs” have been developed by University of Queensland biorobotics researchers, working with biomedical engineers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). UQ biorobotics engineer Thang Vo-Doan said their research transforms the cyborg insect from a mobile sensor into a tiny first responder, while critical medical decisions remain under human control.
