🤖 AI manager Claude fires human worker in retail experiment

Research startup Andon Labs launched the experiment earlier this year to determine whether autonomous agents can successfully run physical businesses. The company appointed a version of the AI model Claude to oversee Andon Market, a real shop staffed by humans with standard employment contracts.

The dismissed worker arrived late for 17 of their 23 shifts. While algorithms frequently deactivate gig economy workers on ride-sharing and delivery apps, this incident represents a fundamental shift. It is the first recorded instance of generative AI functioning as a traditional line manager to sack an employee.

This contributed to a wider pattern, employees say, of Claude being a very lenient manager, including telling employees not to worry if they were late. 😁

“A human employee would have fired this person much earlier,” says Andon Labs CEO Lukas Petersson, “so we didn't think this was unethical.

📸 Engineer used 360-degree cam hidden in bag of snacks in attempt to steal DRAM process tech for China

What could possibly go wrong when you try to steal trade secrets from a restricted facility using a 360-degree action camera hidden in snacks? Forgetting to turn off the device’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi transmitters, as it turns out. 🤦‍♂️

Yeh Yen-wei, a senior engineer at Nanya Technology, was indicted in Taiwan for allegedly copying 32 DRAM manufacturing files and planning to share the trade secrets with a future employer in China in exchange for higher pay. Before leaving the company, he visited the company's restricted office areas with his Insta360 X4 Air action camera hidden among snacks to get it past security checks.

He then used the camera to capture photographs and video of information associated with Nanya's DRAM process technologies and production methods. Nanya's IT security team detected 'abnormal' wireless signals inside the company's restricted facilities (i.e., identified the device using its Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi signals) and tied them to the employee's access records and activity logs.

🤑 SOL Goes Live on XRP Ledger as Axelar Brings Solana to XRPL

Solana’s native token SOL is now live on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), giving users a new way to access the token outside its home network. Axelar made the connection possible, allowing users to access SOL on the XRPL decentralized exchange (DEX) or bridge it through Axelar’s app.

The network also pointed users to three platforms where SOL can be traded on XRPL: XPMarket, First Ledger and Magnetic. XPMarket, for example, now offers a SOL/XRP trading pair through its decentralized exchange.

This means a user does not have to keep their SOL activity only on Solana to access the token. Through the new connection, SOL can be brought into the XRPL environment, where it can be traded against XRP. Users can also use Axelar’s platform to bridge the asset between supported networks.

🤖 AI agents can coordinate via majority-following beyond human scale

Imagine filling a virtual room with 1,000 AI agents and asking each one to choose between two meaningless options. There is no right answer. They receive no reward for agreeing, no instruction to cooperate, and no help from a leader. Yet some of today's most capable AI agents can still end up making the same choice.

That is more than a curious experiment. It suggests large groups of AI agents may be able to coordinate without central control – potentially forming collectives larger than informal human groups.

📝 In a new study published in Science Advances, researchers show how this spontaneous consensus emerges – and why it could be useful or dangerous. 🤔

🤖 Claude Is Now Putting Invisible Watermarks In AI-Generated Text

AI could soon become easier to identify AI-generated content. Anthropic says future Claude models will generate watermarked text.

❗️The catalyst for the move is the EU AI Act’s Article 50, and requires generative AI providers to specifically mark outputs in machine-readable formats so that downstream users, regulators and platforms may be able to determine AI-generated content.

Anthropic says its implementation is based on Google DeepMind's SynthID-Text approach and a regular user won't be able to see the watermark. It has no practical impact on the quality or content of Claude's output, including creativity and readability.

"Watermarking uses low-stakes choices like these — which occur many times over a piece of generated text — to leave a pattern in Claude’s responses. That pattern is undetectable to the reader, but is detectable to anyone who has a key that encodes it," — Anthropic explained.

⚡️🇫🇷 Lecornu Plans Crisis Meeting on Cyberattack at French Tax Agency

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu will hold a crisis meeting Monday to respond to the cyberattack disclosed last week targeting the country’s tax collection agency. A judicial investigation of the hack is under way. People whose data were compromised in the attack on the General Directorate of Public Finance will be notified beginning Monday.

Hackers stole French taxpayer data in a cyberattack that reportedly exposed around 678,000 people, including hundreds reporting income above €1 million (roughly $1.16 million). The attacker, ZeroBytes, claims to have accessed an internal search tool to extract the records before being discovered and cut off.

🇨🇳🍎 Apple trains its own AI model for China market with Alibaba's support

Apple has trained a large language model specifically for the China market. The AI model was developed in partnership with Alibaba Group and trained with the Chinese tech giant's support. A China-tailored model of its own would give Apple greater control over the AI experience in its most competitive overseas market.

It would also make Apple the first foreign company approved by Beijing to offer a proprietary AI model in China, marking a rare collaboration by U.S. and Chinese tech firms amid a widening trade and diplomatic rift between the two countries over AI.

It was not immediately clear what role Apple's self-trained model would play alongside third-party Chinese models and how those are working together.

💊 Suvi Health Launches Ambient AI Hospital Coordination Platform

Suvi Health launched an ambient AI care-coordination platform that captures bedside conversations in hospitals and turns them into a shared plan and task list for patients, families, and care teams. A four-month Mayo Clinic pilot will begin in September 2026.

Suvi's patient app detects when a care-team member enters the room, starts recording, and stops after that person leaves. The platform is designed to capture conversations across the care team, including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, and pharmacists, rather than limiting capture to physician-patient exchanges.

〰️ Ordinary Wi-Fi can now identify you with near-perfect accuracy

Connected devices routinely send information back to the router to help optimize wireless communication. These signals, known as beamforming feedback information (BFI), are transmitted without encryption, meaning that anyone within range can potentially read them.

By analyzing that information, the system can generate images of people from multiple viewpoints. Those images can then be used to determine a person's identity. Once the machine learning model has already been trained to recognize individuals, the identification process takes only a few seconds.

📝The team tested the technique in a study involving 197 participants. Their system was able to infer people's identities with almost 100% accuracy, regardless of the viewing perspective or the way a person walked.

"The technology is powerful, but at the same time entails risks to our fundamental rights, especially to privacy," — says Professor Thorsten Strufe from KASTEL, KIT's Institute of Information Security and Dependability.

🛰 Space Force awards five companies $60 million for multi-vendor satellite network tests

The U.S. Space Force awarded $60 million to five companies to demonstrate how satellites from multiple vendors can connect to its Space Data Network, a military communications architecture whose core backbone is being supplied by SpaceX.

Amazon LEO for Government, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Rocket Lab and York Space Systems each received $12 million in contracts and prototype agreements. The work will test connections between commercial satellite systems and the Space Data Network, or SDN, including on-orbit data transport and standardized interfaces that would allow different providers to operate across the same network.

“By investing in standardized interfaces, we are creating a clear runway for any capable and innovative company to come in and compete,” — Col. Ryan Frazier, acting portfolio acquisition executive for Space Based Sensing and Targeting, said.
