Meta has suffered another data security breach. Hackers have gained access to the personal information of 17.5 million Instagram users. Email addresses, phone numbers, geolocation, and other personal data were leaked.
This isn't the first security scandal for the company, whose market capitalization is in the hundreds of billions. Meta continues to monetize user data, but clearly skimps on protecting it.
The leak occurred through a vulnerability in the platform's API. The attackers used automated scripts to collect data en masse from public and partially protected profiles. The information has already appeared on shadow forums, where it is being sold in packages by category, from influential accounts to ordinary users.
