🤖 World’s First Superconducting Quantum Heat Engine Could Transform Quantum Computing

A machine smaller than a grain of sand has turned heat into useful work near absolute zero, opening a new path to far more powerful quantum computers. Researchers at Aalto University have built the first cyclic quantum heat engine inside a superconducting circuit.

The device uses a qubit, the basic unit of quantum information, as its working substance and repeatedly drives it through heating, cooling, and energy conversion. The study, led by Academy Professor Mikko Möttönen, was published in Nature Communications.

“This is the first experimental demonstration of a cyclic quantum heat engine in superconducting circuits. Using a single controllable quantum refrigerator as both the hot and cold environment of the engine makes it simpler and more versatile,” — says Tuomas Uusnäkki, the study’s first author.

The measurements showed that the engine produced positive work rather than merely shifting heat around the circuit. That capability may become valuable as quantum computers grow.

🤖 China’s BrainCo unveils mind-to-robot platform at World AI Conference

Chinese tech unicorn BrainCo
has unveiled what it claims is the world’s first integrated “brain-to-robot” platform that lets users control robots using only their thoughts, without moving a muscle. The launch of the Brain-Controlled Robot AI Platform was announced at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai.

According to BrainCo, its platform works by capturing brain signals via an electroencephalogram (EEG) headset worn by the user. AI-based algorithms then decode these neural signals to identify the user’s intentions, translating them directly into robotic actions.

The platform is compatible with a wide range of third-party hardware, including humanoid robots, robotic arms and robotic dogs. For example, a robotic arm can be directed to grasp a cup and pick up an apple based solely on brain signals.

🇫🇷🤑 France considered Ripple and XRP for digital euro, CPA Australia report shows

Ripple and XRP were mentioned as possible foundations for Europe’s central digital currency, according to a report by CPA Australia.

📝 The document refers to Ripple’s proposal to offer a private variant of the XRP Ledger designed for use by central banks. This initiative aims to deliver a solution where digital currencies can be issued and managed with enhanced security, control, and flexibility.

The CPA Australia report notes that “France has openly discussed Ripple/XRP as a possible platform to Europe’s central digital currency,” underlining favorable features including strong trust among banking institutions.

➡️ According to CPA Australia, Ripple and XRP received support from banks due to their operation on a permissioned model, where only selected nodes validate transactions, in contrast to the decentralized and permissionless approach of Bitcoin and Ethereum.

🤖 Jeff Bezos and UK government invest in £2bn British startup CuspAI

Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, and the UK government have invested in a £2bn British AI startup that is aiming to become the “search engine for rare materials” that accelerates the next wave of technological breakthroughs.

The Cambridge-based CuspAI has launched the AI Materials Foundry, a coalition of more than 48 tech companies, industrial firms and research facilities. The goal of this body — whose members include Nvidia Corp., Meta Platforms Inc., and Hyundai Motor Group — is to pool computing and scientific resources with the aim of building software that can help researchers develop new materials for chipmakers and other industries at a faster pace and for a lower cost than today’s methods.

“The world simply can’t make the progress it needs to with known materials, that much is clear. That’s what we’re on a mission to solve – combining frontier agentic AI with deep domain expertise, exclusive data access and close customer partnerships,” — said the CuspAI co-founders Dr Chad Edwards and Prof Max Welling.

🇧🇷 Brazil’s securities regulator sets up task force with 60-day deadline for tokenization proposal

Brazil’s securities regulator, the Comissão de Valores Mobiliários (CVM) said it created a working group to draft an experimental framework for tokenized securities. The regulator said the framework will cover the registration, custody, trading and settlement of securities using distributed ledger technology.

🔜 The group must send its first proposal to the CVM’s board within 60 days of being formally installed, while a broader review will run for 120 days, with a possible 30-day extension.

🔜 The group brings together 14 CVM departments and may consult government agencies, market associations, self-regulatory bodies and outside specialists. It will also review cybersecurity risks, international regulatory models and results from earlier sandbox programs.

❗️Brazil already applies securities law according to a token’s economic characteristics. The CVM’s 2022 guidance clarified that using blockchain does not change whether an asset qualifies as a security.

The new review will focus on what happens around the asset. 🚀

🚉 Starlink is being built directly into a new fleet of 26 high-speed trains

Italo, Italy's high-speed rail operator, has ordered 26 Siemens Velaro trains to break into the German market. The deal runs about 3 billion euros and includes 30 years of maintenance, with an option for 14 more trains.

The new trains are built with Starlink antennas from the factory, giving passengers satellite internet instead of patchy trackside signal. Italo is also fitting Starlink across its existing Italian fleet, with the rollout finishing in 2027.

In year-long testing at 300 km/h the system held speeds above 400 Mbps. CEO Gianbattista La Rocca calls Italo "the first major high-speed rail company in the world" to go this route. German service starts mid-2028 on two routes, Munich to Dortmund and Munich to Hamburg, reaching 18 cities.

⚡️Trump announced a 50% tariff on some Canadian goods starting next month

The administration took three actions using Section 338 of Tariff Act of 1930, a law never before used to impose tariffs, but which the administration says allows it to respond to discriminatory treatment of U.S. products.

The items subject to the new tariff include milk and cream, hockey equipment and alcohol — but not major resource imports including energy, potash, fish and critical minerals. Goods covered by separate duties on industries, including autos and steel, will also be spared.

“While the Administration continues to secure fair and reciprocal trade deals with our trading partners, Canada, unlike other partners and allies, continues to retaliate against the United States for its efforts to rebalance trade and protect U.S. industry in national-security sensitive sectors,” — USTR Jamieson Greer said.

🇺🇸 Trump agrees to ethics provision as crypto bill inches closer to Senate vote

President Donald Trump has agreed to ethics language — potentially moving the ball forward to getting cryptocurrency legislation passed into law. An agreement on the ethics provision had been reached by Monday evening after months of negotiations.

"We are now hearing Trump has agreed to an ethics provision," — the source said.

📌 Crypto in America's Eleanor Terrett and PunchbowlNews' Brendan Pedersen earlier reported the news. Pedersen reported that Democrats had not seen the text yet.

Lawmakers and the White House have spent much of the past year negotiating ethics provisions that would limit how presidents, vice presidents, members of Congress and other federal officials can profit from digital assets while in office. At the center of the dispute has been Trump's memecoins and his family's company, World Liberty Financial.

❗️Bill text is expected to be released in the coming days. Afterward, the full Senate could vote on the bill. The Senate has only until the first week of August to vote on the bill. If the Senate passes the bill, it goes back to the House before going to Trump's desk.

🇷🇺 The Russian State Duma Passes Bill to Regulate the Cryptocurrency Market

⬇️ Russia’s State Duma completed the second and third readings of a comprehensive digital assets regulation bill on July 21, 2026.

The legislation, officially known as Bill No. 1194918-8 or “On Digital Currencies and Digital Rights,” treats cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin as legal property. This classification provides holders with clearer legal protections in areas including bankruptcy proceedings, divorce settlements, and court disputes.

📌 The bill maintains Russia’s long-standing prohibition on using digital currencies for domestic payments, ensuring the ruble remains the sole legal tender inside the country. However, it introduces a key exception for international transactions.

🟠Russian companies and entrepreneurs will now be permitted to employ cryptocurrencies for cross-border trade settlements, offering a vital workaround amid ongoing Western sanctions that have restricted access to traditional banking systems like SWIFT.

🟠The legislation also establishes a regulated framework for crypto market participants. Licensed exchanges, brokers, and custodians will operate under oversight from the Bank of Russia.

❗️Following its passage in the lower house, the bill now proceeds to the Federation Council, Russia’s upper chamber, for approval.

Once cleared there, it will reach President Vladimir Putin’s desk for final signature. Implementation of core provisions is anticipated around September 1, 2026, giving regulators time to finalize supporting rules. 🚀
