๐Ÿค– Physicist created a tiny universe where time emerged without a clock

A physicist at the University of Birmingham, Professor Giovanni Barontini, has created a laboratory "mini universe" to explore one of physics' biggest questions: what is time? His study, published in Physical Review Research, suggests that time can emerge from the behavior of a quantum system rather than being measured by a traditional clock.

The experiment used a cloud of 24,000 ultracold atoms inside an isolated system split into two regions by a thin barrier created with two laser beams of different frequencies. This produced two regions: an observed ("bright") region and an unobserved ("dark") region. The bright region repeatedly expanded and contracted, resembling a simplified version of a Big Bang.

Because the system was completely isolated, Barontini could reconstruct the sequence of events using only information from inside the mini universe itself, without referring to any outside laboratory clock. The results showed that time could emerge from changes taking place within the quantum system rather than existing as an independent background that always moves forward.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Power company hikes data center bills by 30%, cuts residential electricity costs by 1.3%

Portland General Electric (PGE), Oregonโ€™s largest electricity supplier, will increase its rate for large power consumers by 29.7%. Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) reports that the stateโ€™s Public Utility Commission (PUC) unanimously approved the increase, which will primarily affect large industries, data centers, and cryptocurrency mining operations.

Meanwhile, costs for residential users will decline. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek called this move โ€œa win for Oregonians.โ€

โ€œWe must continue to do whatever we can to keep working families and small businesses from absorbing the costs of data center energy use,โ€ โ€” Kotek said.

๐Ÿค‘ Ripple Prime will push XRP directly into the DTCCโ€™s central plumbing

In the above documents, this is how the DTCC will use XRP, according to crypto researcher SMQKE.

๐ŸŽฏ It was always about the โ€œplumbingโ€.

โ—๏ธRipple Prime, which directly utilizes XRP, is a direct contributor to DTCCโ€™s tokenization platform. Two more official DTCC participants utilize the XRPL as well: Fireblocks and Securitize.

Outside of working group participation in the tokenization platform, the XRPL also has an entry point to the service through DTCCโ€™s acquisition of Securrency, which is the exact means by which Stellar was able to be utilized by the DTCC.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งUK to regulate cloud service providers Microsoft, Google and others to protect financial stability

Britain has designated cloud service providers Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Oracle as critical third-party suppliers to its financial sector, bringing them under direct regulatory oversight from July 13. The move is aimed at strengthening the resilience of financial firms by reducing the risk of widespread disruption from cyber attacks or technology outages.

"As banks, insurers and financial market infrastructures become increasingly reliant on cloud services, disruption at a major supplier could affect multiple firms at the same time, potentially impacting services customers depend on," the government said.

โš–๏ธ OKX, MetaMask, Matter Labs back dispute resolution court for AI agents

A group of crypto and Web3 firms that includes OKX, MetaMask, Matter Labs and Genlayer have formed the โ€œInternet Courtโ€ to reach dispute resolutions between AI agents.

โžก๏ธ These days, AI agents negotiate and pay one another without humans in the loop, but as with human-to-human transactions, agent-to-agent transactions will run into contractual disagreements.

โ—๏ธThe problem is that agentic systems have no way to settle these disputes, and traditional courts are not built to handle such cases. Hence the need for the 27-firm-backed protocol, led by the Genlayer Foundation, which makes AI-based payments, escrow and dispute resolution interoperable, according to a press release.

โ€œInternet Court is the shared place agents can turn to when a deal goes wrong. Machine-speed money needs machine-speed adjudication,โ€ โ€” said David Riudor, CEO and co-founder of the GenLayer Foundation.

โ€œWith our founding members, weโ€™re turning a fragmented space into a single open skill that any agent can use to make financial commitments hold up, even when they're contested,โ€ โ€” said Albert Castellana, co-founder and CEO of GenLayer Labs.

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ทHyundai Becomes First Major South Korean Company to Introduce Internal Stablecoin Transfers

Hyundai
, the worldโ€™s third-largest carmaker by vehicle sales, moved a stablecoin-based, cross-border, internal remittance system into production readiness on the Avalanche blockchain, becoming the first major South Korean company to do so. ๐Ÿš€

"Hyundai is the first major enterprise to publicly announce this type of implementation on Avalanche, but the initiative represents more than a technical experiment," said Justin Kim, head of APAC at Ava Labs, which develops and supports the blockchain platform.

"This is already a real treasury management use case, not a sandbox โ€” the pilot moved live USD and USDT between Hyundai Motor's U.S. and Mexico entities.โ€
