For decades, magnons have shown enormous promise for quantum technologies, but one critical limitation has kept them from practical use: they disappear almost as soon as they form. Now, an international team of physicists led by Andrii Chumak at the University of Vienna has increased magnon lifetimes by nearly two orders of magnitude, from just a few hundred nanoseconds to as long as 18 microseconds, almost 100 times longer than any previously observed value.
Magnons are quasiparticles that represent a wave of coordinated electron spin flips in a magnetic material.
Magnons begin to resemble long-lived, dependable carriers of quantum information, similar in function to the superconducting qubits used in many leading quantum processors today. The breakthrough could ultimately help enable highly compact quantum computers, potentially no larger than a 1-cent coin. The findings were published in Science Advances.

Asset manager, Invesco is preparing to launch a tokenized fund to serve the fast-growing stablecoin market, the latest sign that traditional asset managers are racing to manage the reserves backing digital dollars.
The filing named tokenization specialist Superstate as sub-transfer agent. Superstate will maintain a blockchain-integrated shareholder registry, combining traditional fund records with onchain tokens representing ownership. The filing said the fund will operate on a public blockchain, though it does not yet identify the network.
That move placed Invesco alongside firms such as BlackRock, Franklin Templeton and Fidelity that have embraced tokenized money market funds as a way to modernize how traditional assets are issued, transferred and settled using blockchain rails.

BMW Group has expanded its use of Physical AI in manufacturing by introducing the next-generation Figure 03 humanoid robot at its Spartanburg plant in the US. Building on the successful deployment of Figure 02, the new robot will handle complex sequencing tasks in logistics as part of the automaker’s push toward AI-driven production.
“Our 11-month deployment of Figure 02 proved that humanoids are no longer lab experiments – they can be a valuable asset in establishing a flexible, reliable manufacturing workforce,” said Brett Adcock, Founder and CEO of Figure AI

The proposed tax measure, which would require billionaires to pay a one-time tax equal to 5% of their net worth, will appear on the ballot in November after opponents, including Gov. Gavin Newsom, failed to cut a deal with the union behind it before the June 25 deadline.
Now the 200-plus billionaires in California — which has more of them than any other state and most countries — are facing the reality that the tax could become law.
The so-called billionaire tax is among the highest-profile ballot efforts in the US this year taking aim at rising wealth disparities, and is set to be one of the state’s most contentious ballot initiatives. It has already spurred tech moguls to pour millions of dollars into attempts to stop the proposal.

Austria is pushing the European Union to consider hosting Anthropic PBC within its borders to counter US efforts to block foreigners from using its most advanced AI models.
Member states should explore “the strategic establishment and participation of Anthropic within the European Union,” Austrian State Secretary for Digitalization Alexander Pröll said in a letter to European Commission Executive Vice President Henna Virkkunen.

In the X post, Stellar Rippler claimed that Ripple is now “capturing SWIFT liquidity,” pointing to what the author described as increasing integration between the blockchain company and the traditional banking system.
Responding to a question about how much of SWIFT the XRP Ledger could eventually take, Garlinghouse said he focuses less on messaging and more on liquidity because, in his view, controlling liquidity is what ultimately benefits XRP.
❗️ He explained that banks own the liquidity moving through the financial system and concluded by estimating that Ripple could capture 14% of SWIFT’s liquidity within five years. The projection aligns with previous public remarks in which Garlinghouse suggested Ripple could secure a meaningful share of the cross-border payments market over time.
Building on those comments, Stellar Rippler stated that Ripple could reach that milestone sooner than the CEO’s original timeline, saying it could happen “way before 2030.”

China’s Zhipu AI (Z.ai) released its open-weight GLM-5.2, and security researchers have claimed that it matches Mythos in certain bug-finding and cybersecurity scenarios. While GLM lags behind models from Anthropic and OpenAI in other, more general tasks, it seems that China has dramatically reduced the gap in the capabilities between its models and those of the US.
Because GLM is an open-weight model, it can be downloaded and run by anyone on readily available hardware. That gives it great flexibility and allows power users deep access, but it also makes it ripe for abuse by bad actors who can run it with little oversight.

Deloitte, IBM, and Red Hat announced a collaboration to help protect the software supply chain against increasingly automated cyber threats. Deloitte joins the initiative as an integration collaborator for Lightwell, bringing its broader secured software supply chain architecture and cyber risk services to the large-scale enterprise open source security model deployed by IBM and Red Hat.
“Exploits don't wait for manual patching processes, and neither can enterprise response,” said Adnan Amjad, Deloitte’s US Cyber leader.
“Together, we're enabling clients to operate at machine speed to identify, validate, and remediate vulnerabilities. This collaboration is about building the operational resilience needed to maintain trust across increasingly complex software ecosystems — creating systems that can withstand and neutralize risk without disrupting the business,” added Adnan Amjad.

🚗 Ford rehires ‘gray beard’ engineers after AI falls short
Ford executives said they have hired 350 veteran engineers — some of them were former employees, while others had been working at suppliers — after AI and automated systems failed to deliver the desired quality level.
This doesn’t mean Ford is abandoning its AI plans entirely. Instead, it’s using the rehired employees — referred to as “gray beard” engineers — to train younger staff and reprogram AI tools.

Ford executives said they have hired 350 veteran engineers — some of them were former employees, while others had been working at suppliers — after AI and automated systems failed to deliver the desired quality level.
The company’s CEO Kumar Galhotra said that Ford had been “relying more and more on automated quality systems” with disappointing results. So the company “brought back technical specialists,” and those specialists “hunt for failure points before a part ever reaches the plant floor.”
