A team of researchers from China and Japan has developed a ultra-flexible brain implant electrode array. It overcomes a major hurdle in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs): the physical mismatch between stiff metal electrodes and soft brain tissue, which typically leads to chronic inflammation and signal degradation.
Researchers tested the flexible brain implant in animal trials. Interestingly, it achieved long-term signal clarity and safe, stable functionality over an 18-month period.
BCIs are advancing rapidly, but their long-term survival inside the body has always been the weak point. Invasive brain implants should ideally last a lifetime rather than just a few years. This new class of organic hydrogel could eventually solve the gap between machine and mind, offering a durable solution for the long term.

In 2024, Norway banned smartphones from classrooms, requiring students to lock their devices up during school hours. According to a study published by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, bullying decreased across the board, and grade point averages started to climb once the device restriction was implemented. The nation followed that up with a planned social media ban earlier this year, which would keep anyone under the age of 16 off social platforms.

Engineers at The University of Texas at Austin have successfully developed a wearable jacket capable of harvesting clean drinking water directly from the air. This innovative technology aims to provide a portable, on-demand water source for individuals operating in areas lacking infrastructure, such as hikers, campers, agricultural workers, and emergency responders.
The jacket features a textile that collects moisture and directs it to detachable units. These units are placed in a foldable collector and heated to release the water. The jacket produced between 400 and 900 milliliters of water per day, depending on humidity levels.
The researchers are investigating further applications for the material, such as integration into backpacks, tents, and emergency shelters. The University of Texas at Austin has filed a patent application for the technology to facilitate its use in fields such as remote operations and disaster response.

Brazil’s Integration and Regional Development Ministry and federal police are investigating an intrusion into the civil defense alert system that sent messages containing the word “misanthropy” to the mobile phones of millions of Brazilians.
The message was sent as an “Extreme Alert” — used to warn the public about extreme weather — in what was likely the result of a hacker attack, according to the ministry. National Secretary of Protection and Civil Defense Wolnei Wolff told a press conference that 10 alerts were tracked in various Brazilian states. The number of phones affected nationwide wasn’t disclosed.

The Chinese government quietly approved the Space Computing Industry Innovation Center in early June, which aims to bring together rocket and satellite manufacturers, semiconductor fabs, and AI tech companies to build a space computing network. According to the Beijing government, this aims to connect the entire industrial chain of space computing and boost the development of the satellite Internet of Things (IoT) sector.
The center is set to be officially launched later this month, and it will focus on six major research areas:

Midjourney built its name on AI-generated images. Now, the company outlined plans for a body-scanning system built around ultrasonic sensing and large-scale data capture. The idea is to generate detailed, three-dimensional images of the body in under a minute, with performance the company says could rival MRI scans but without the same discomfort.
At full scale, the company envisions a ring containing roughly half a million sensors, each about the size of a grain of sand. Together, they would generate a constant stream of ultrasonic signals, producing what Midjourney says could amount to terabytes of data every second.
"You want as much data as you can get about your health as quickly and as cheaply as possible. In other words, you want a technology optimized for getting as many megabytes per second per dollar of information about your body," — the company wrote.
