♻️ With support from Google, Researchers at the University of California San Diego are building a useful second-life for consumer smartphones.
The carbon footprint of computing comes from two main sources: operational carbon, generated by energy use during operation, and embodied carbon, produced during hardware manufacturing. While operational emissions can be reduced through energy efficiency and clean energy, cutting manufacturing-related emissions is more challenging.
To address this, researchers at the University of California San Diego are building a pathway for the second life of phones through the exploration of “phone cluster computing.” This is a process whereby the motherboards of retired smartphones are extracted, collected into clusters, and redeployed as a general-purpose computing platform.
The study revealed that smartphones from just three years ago still deliver a higher single-core performance. With Google’s support, the university plans to deploy a datacenter built from 2,000 Pixel smartphones that will provide hundreds of researchers and students with low-cost, low-carbon cloud computing, reducing the need for newly-manufactured hardware and their associated emissions.

China has begun construction of the new Three Gorges waterway project in Yichang, Hubei Province, marking the first major infrastructure project of the country’s 2026–2030 development plan. The project will modernize vessel traffic management and ship-lock operations through advanced digital technologies, aiming to improve navigation efficiency and reduce logistics costs along the Yangtze River.
The expansion is expected to significantly increase transport capacity at the Three Gorges hub, one of China’s busiest inland shipping corridors. Once completed, annual cargo throughput capacity will rise to 336 million tonnes, nearly double the current 170 million tonnes, while also enhancing direct river-sea shipping connections.

USD1, the stablecoin issued by the Trump family's crypto venture World Liberty Financial, has gone from locking retail depositors out of a DeFi lending pool to being used to pay fighters on the White House lawn.
"Paying the fighters in the USD1 stablecoin would have the same economic function as writing them a check," — Todd Phillips, a crypto expert at the Klaros Group, said.

🕵🏻♂️ FBI dismantles Chinese phishing service that coached buyers to generate scam sites using AI
The FBI, Google, and Lumen Technologies say they’ve dismantled a China-based phishing-as-a-service operation called Outsider Enterprise, seizing its servers and payment wallets, and instigating a civil lawsuit. The operation, dubbed Operation Ghost Hook and part of the FBI's wider Operation Riptide, seized the group's core admin domains, a Shopify storefront, and about $100,000 in USDT from Outsider payment wallets.
Sold through a Telegram bot for as little as $88 per week, the kit allowed buyers to spin up fake bank, toll, and delivery pages in minutes, with Google's complaint alleging its operators handed out tutorials teaching subscribers to prompt Gemini for the underlying code. The FBI links the platform to roughly 3.87 million stolen credit cards and an estimated $1.9 billion in losses since July 2023.

The real time payroll platform, now featuring a brand new enterprise dashboard designed for HR managers overseeing large, global teams, enables employers to stream salaries and contractor payments in stablecoins.
Several European institutions and multinational employers are already in final testing stages on Zebec's Stellar payroll rails, evaluating employee compensation, contractor payouts, and benefits distribution workflows. These pilot deployments create a foundation for broader enterprise adoption across the Stellar ecosystem.
"We value our long-standing relationship with Stellar and share a common focus on bringing blockchain technology into real-world financial applications," — said Simon Babakhani, CEO of Zebec Network. "Stellar has increasingly become a destination for institutional blockchain adoption. We are excited to expand our collaboration and bring enterprise grade payroll infrastructure to the network.”🤝

The company announced Monday that it’s rolling out new AI features on Facebook that aim to change how users find information, create content, and interact with the platform.
The headline update is “AI Mode,” a new way to search Facebook that uses Meta AI to surface answers pulled from public posts across the platform, including Groups and Reels. Instead of scrolling through search results, users can ask a question in plain language and get a synthesized answer based on what people are actually discussing.
