BYD is preparing to bring its megawatt “Flash Charging” network, which can add about 250 miles (400 km) of range in 5 minutes, to Canada – the first confirmed deployment in North America. The plan was revealed through a new BYD job posting in Toronto for a manager tasked with executing “BYD’s flash charging network expansion strategy and business growth across Canada.”
The second-generation Blade battery is also a particularly good fit for the Canadian market. BYD claims it can charge from 10% to 70% in about 5 minutes even at -20°C (-4°F) – directly addressing the winter charging slowdowns that remain one of the top barriers to EV adoption in Canada.

Every day, specialized cells remove old bone while others replace it with new material, a process that keeps the skeleton strong and adaptable throughout life. When this delicate balance shifts too far in one direction, bones can gradually weaken, raising the risk of fractures and diseases such as osteoporosis.
For decades, vitamin K has been recognized as an important nutrient for bone health. Now, a team led by Dr. Mathieu Ferron, Director of the Molecular Physiology Research Unit at the IRCM in Canada, have uncovered an unexpected communication system inside bone. Their findings suggest that vitamin K does far more than support bone mineralization. It also helps control how bone cells coordinate the breakdown and renewal of skeletal tissue.
Using genetically engineered mice, cell culture experiments, molecular analyses, histology, and microcomputed tomography imaging, the researchers identified a previously unknown pathway that helps regulate bone resorption. Their study was published in Bone Research.
“The study provides a new framework for understanding how vitamin K influences skeletal biology,” — Dr. Ferron explains.

Swiss voters on Sunday rejected a proposal to limit the country’s population to 10 million by 2050, according to the preliminary results of a referendum. The current trend suggests 55% of participants voted against, to 45% for.
The proposal came from the right-wing Swiss People's Party, which has long campaigned on an anti-immigration platform. Switzerland's population has grown rapidly since 2002, when it stood at 7.3 million. Now it is 9.1 million, 27% of whom are not Swiss citizens.

♻️ With support from Google, Researchers at the University of California San Diego are building a useful second-life for consumer smartphones.
The carbon footprint of computing comes from two main sources: operational carbon, generated by energy use during operation, and embodied carbon, produced during hardware manufacturing. While operational emissions can be reduced through energy efficiency and clean energy, cutting manufacturing-related emissions is more challenging.
To address this, researchers at the University of California San Diego are building a pathway for the second life of phones through the exploration of “phone cluster computing.” This is a process whereby the motherboards of retired smartphones are extracted, collected into clusters, and redeployed as a general-purpose computing platform.
The study revealed that smartphones from just three years ago still deliver a higher single-core performance. With Google’s support, the university plans to deploy a datacenter built from 2,000 Pixel smartphones that will provide hundreds of researchers and students with low-cost, low-carbon cloud computing, reducing the need for newly-manufactured hardware and their associated emissions.

China has begun construction of the new Three Gorges waterway project in Yichang, Hubei Province, marking the first major infrastructure project of the country’s 2026–2030 development plan. The project will modernize vessel traffic management and ship-lock operations through advanced digital technologies, aiming to improve navigation efficiency and reduce logistics costs along the Yangtze River.
The expansion is expected to significantly increase transport capacity at the Three Gorges hub, one of China’s busiest inland shipping corridors. Once completed, annual cargo throughput capacity will rise to 336 million tonnes, nearly double the current 170 million tonnes, while also enhancing direct river-sea shipping connections.
